1. Plans for the Graphic Arts Loan Collection in the Morrison
Library --D.Duer
Dave Duer, Director of Library Development, attended Cabinet to present a
proposed plan to revive and expand the Graphic Arts Loan program in the
Morrison Library. Original prints from the collection are made available
for lending to students, faculty, and staff. Dave shared samples of early
promotional materials publicizing "art for the asking". The original
purpose of the Graphic Arts Collection, in addition to supporting new
artists, was "to make possible the enjoyment of art." Prints were made
available to students through the generosity of private donors, and Library
Development views the Graphic Arts Collection as a natural for continued
donor participation. Cabinet agreed.
Dave will prepare a written proposal for development opportunities to
underwrite some of the costs of the borrowing program and/or to expand the
collection. Alex Warren has issued a call to library staff regarding his
inventory of the collection, to be conducted by July 23, after which the
collection must be appraised. Tom will advise Professor Newcomb (Senate
Library Committee), and a faculty advisory committee may be formed at the
appropriate time.
2. ARL Conference on Special Collections at Brown
Unversity --C.Faulhaber, T.Leonard
Charles Faulhaber and Tom Leonard attended the "Working Symposium on the
Future of Special Collections in Research Libraries" at Brown University,
June 27-29. Notes on the proceedings were distributed to Cabinet
members. It was emphasized that Special Collections should not be
considered elitist but rather an integral part of library mainstream, and
needs are so great that library resources should be reallocated to
them. Efforts are underway to establish a national program to deal with
backlogs and get metadata on the web so researchers will know where
materials are located. The estimated average backlog is 15-20%. Locally,
Bancroft lead the EAD project but backlogs may hamper future deposits to
the collections. Bancroft is on the leading edge and has begun to break
down barriers. For the future, Bancroft plans to work more closely with
selectors, and the Library will highlight Berkeley's special collections in
library strategic planning.
3. Progress Report on Permission to Recruit for Head of Library Human
Resources
--T.Leonard
Tom reported that Cal Hall is reviewing the Library's request for
permission to recruit for Director of Library Human Resources. A letter of
approval is expected soon. The university librarian will decide whether to
accept the MSP classification level approved by Academic Personnel. Tom
noted that campus is in the process of establishing three broad categories
for human resources professionals, and these deliberations affect the
classification process in the MSP series.
[Note: The position was approved and accepted as MSP I, and the
recruitment process can now proceed.]
4. Diversity Librarian Initiative --P.Iannuzzi
Cabinet decided to fund a diversity librarian for two years. Patty
Iannuzzi presented the UC Santa Barbara "Library Fellowship Program 2000"
as a sample 2-year program for the UC Berkeley Library to follow since UCSB
reports success with its program, which is now in its thirteenth year. The
program is designed for recent graduates from an ALA accredited library
program, provides an opportunity to work in a culturally diverse
environment, and encourages participation of underrepresented librarians in
academic research libraries.
Tom will consult with Sue Koskinen, chair of the LAUC Cultural Diversity
Committee, and Tony Newcomb, chair of the Academic Senate Library
Committee, for recommendations to form a selection committee for such a
fellowship at The Library.
5. Replacing Charles Faulhaber on Org Dev Subcommittee --T.Leonard
In the Fall, Charles Faulhaber will become a member of CAPRA and will be
unable to continue his participation in the Library's Organizational
Development Subcommittee. Cabinet elected Peter Zhou, Director of the East
Asian Library, as Charles' replacement on the subcommittee. Charles and
Peter will both attend Org Dev meetings until Fall semester begins. Tom
will report Peter's appointment to Debbie Sommer, subcommittee chair.
