immediately after Environmental Design returns to Wurster Hall.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tom Leonard delivered a letter to EVCP Gray on March 20, in support of the
“merit-bonus” awards for the 43 CUE members whose awards are in limbo. The
letter was intended “to confirm the verbal promise in writing” and assure
campus authorities that the Library is prepared to pay the awards out of
its own funds as soon as campus Human Resources clears the bonuses for
payment. [Note: A copy of this letter has been provided to each of the 43
CUE members to support their award claims.]
Earlier today, Tom Leonard met with the Class of ’56 committee that is
raising funds for preservation. For their 40th reunion, this class raised
funds for the Preservation of Rare Books as well as circulating books, and
they have decided to add to the endowment (now valued at about $700,000)
for their 45th reunion.
The Research Libraries Group (RLG) has invited Tom Leonard to join their
board. He will attend RLG’s annual meeting in Ottawa in April but declined
joining their board at this time. Tom will join the Association of Research
Libraries’ (ARL) Research Collections Committee.
Ann Jensen introduced Nick Robinson, who is the incoming chair of Sciences
Council effective April 1st. As council chair, Nick is also a member of
Cabinet.
Charles Faulhaber reported that Jack Kerouac’s manuscript of “On the Road”
is on the market. The entire collection may go to the New York Public Library.

1. Coupons for Free Coffee at FSM for ALA --I.Stirling
This year’s American Library Association (ALA) conference will be held in
San Francisco, June 14-20 with exhibits June 16-19. After a brief
discussion about what types of hospitality the Library might provide the
ALA conference attendees, Cabinet decided that decentralized visits would
be most appropriate and administrators will schedule meetings individually
with their visiting colleagues. Technical Services is planning to offer
specialized tours to certain vendors and other technical services
people. Doe/Moffitt will be “open house” to those with ALA badges, and
library security points will be advised to welcome these visitors.
It was agreed that the Library would offer a “free drink” at the Free
Speech Movement Café in Moffitt Library for attendees with ALA
badges. Coupons can be collected by the FSM staff for later billing to the
Library. Isabel Stirling will provide an announcement for the ALA Cognotes
publication.
2. Reclassification of Bancroft Archivists as Librarians --C.Faulhaber
Bancroft Archivists are currently classified as Library Assistants levels
IV and V. Charles Faulhaber has drafted a proposal to reclassify the
Archivists to Librarians, in order to maintain equity and status with their
peers at other institutions. LHRD has reviewed the proposal which was
brought before Cabinet for discussion. Since the proposal has not been
reviewed and discussed by LAUC or CAPA, Cabinet will share the document and
seek the advice of LAUC and CAPA, before further action is taken. In the
meantime, C.Faulhaber will prepare individual job descriptions and gather
comparable job descriptions for archivists at Stanford, UCLA, Irvine, etc.,
which would accompany any proposal sent forward for review by LAUC or
CAPA. It was suggested that CAPA might wish to discuss the matter in a
closed session first, before attending a Cabinet discussion that would
include Kay Starkweather, representing LHRD. Cabinet will take no further
action until the LAUC chair and CAPA have been informed.
3. Visiting Library Directors on August 29 --M.Ternberg
On August 29 and 30, a group of European business/economics library
directors will be visiting Berkeley and the CDL. Milt Ternberg will be
working on a schedule for the visit and asked if Cabinet might be willing
to host a luncheon and invite one of the visiting directors to discuss his
management philosophy and organizational changes at his
institution. Cabinet approved a luncheon meeting (including funding) on
August 29 with the group. Milt will make the arrangements.
4. SOPAG/Review of the UL’s Advisory Structure --B.Hurley
As a member of SOPAG, Bernie Hurley reported that a review of the UL’s
advisory structure is underway. The ULs will canvass their local campus
staff, and SOPAG will be coordinating the feedback from its constituent
groups. Ann Jensen is a member of the LAUC review task force that sent
questionnaires to all LAUC divisional chairs. Since the LAUC survey may
provide some useful questions for Cabinet to consider, Bernie will contact
Barclay Ogden for a copy of the survey questionnaire. SOPAG will gather
information by April 18, for presentation to the ULs on April 27.
5. Take Your Child to Work Day: Library Activities --All
“Take Your Child to Work Day” is on April 26. On behalf of the
Subcommittee on Organization Development, Cam Olen has taken the lead in
providing Cabinet with a proposed schedule of activities and will help with
the solicitation of volunteers and coordination of the day’s
activities. Cabinet approved setting up a table with donuts and juice at
the Doe North Entrance at 8:30 a.m. and reserving Morrison Library from
9:00-10:00 a.m. to distribute badges and favors to the children. There
will be various activities for the children from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Tom
Leonard will issue a call to library staff for volunteer workers.
6. LAUC Conference November 2 at Clark Kerr Campus --A.Jensen, N.Robinson
Ann Jensen and Nick Robinson reported that LAUC-B is planning an all-day
conference, “Forging Library Partnerships in the Networked Age”, on
November 2, at the Clark Kerr Conference Center. The audience will be
information professionals from educational institutions, the corporate and
publishing world, and other interested researchers. Admin approved support
from Library Graphics and $1500 funding for the event, and Tom Leonard has
agreed to moderate a panel discussion.
