1. Library Display/Hospitality for ALA in June, 2001 (T.Leonard)
T.Leonard asked Cabinet to consider what hospitality the Library might want
to extend to the attendees at this year’s American Library Association
(ALA) conference, which will be held in San Francisco in June. It is
expected that the ALA Conference opening reception will be in San
Francisco. Cabinet members noted that an ALA RBMS pre-conference on rare
books is being held on the Berkeley campus, and Technical Services will be
offering specialized tours to certain vendors and other technical services
people. Other ALA related activities may also be underway. One idea
suggested was that we offer a free cup of coffee at the Free Speech
Movement Café to visitors with ALA Conference badges, and also have an
“open house” at Doe/Moffitt to those with conference badges (entrance to
Gardner Stacks). While no formal plan is being considered, ideas for tours
or events and suggestions for advertising the library activities should be
sent to I.Stirling who will report back to Cabinet on this topic.
2. Music Library (J.Roberts, T.Leonard)
In February, the Music Library’s building project was put on hold due to a
funding shortfall in the amount of $1.85 million. Various options for
reducing the cost of the building or raising additional funds are currently
under consideration. It is hoped that some resolution can be reached very
soon, so that ground-breaking can still occur as planned in Fall 2001.
3. Great Rooms, especially Subject Catalog Hall, & Development (T.Leonard)
T.Leonard reported that the Development Advancement Committee of the
Library Advisory Board will meet on March 9, and will explore development
possibilities for a project to restore the Great Rooms, especially the
Subject Catalog Hall in Doe Library. The group is looking for a project
with major impact, and there are many reasons for choosing the Subject
Catalog Hall. It could be renovated for as little as $300K, without campus
bureaucratic interference, and would help to restore reference services,
which the Library has already declared as a top priority.
D.Duer will attend the Cabinet meeting on March 15 and give his updated
development report.
4. ARL/OCLC Forum on “Measuring Academic Library Performance in a Digital
Environment”
(P.Iannuzzi)
P.Iannuzzi reported on the ARL/OCLC forum she attended that addressed
issues surrounding measuring library performance in the digital
environment. Traditional ways lack measures for impact on users, and new
bench-marking methods seek to measure learning outcomes and service
effectiveness/user satisfaction. ARL has a new measures project that will
attempt to measure impact on users rather than using the old standard of
counting books in the collection. Emphasis is being placed on rethinking
the measures for defining excellence and linking library leadership to
campus educational planning in the strategic planning process.
It was noted that several departments on the Berkeley campus are using the
Balanced Scorecard Method, which was developed by the Harvard Business
School for use in higher education, and a Pew grant will be awarded to an
institution to develop assessment methods for learning outcomes.
