anniversary celebration, Genentech pledged $500,000 to The Bancoft
Library’s Program in the History of Biotechnology and Bioscience.

projects: Japanese historical texts; Chinese rubbings; Japanese
historical maps; and the Shanghai photographs project.

A G E N D A
1. Library’s Budget Submission 2001-02 (M.Rancer)
At last week’s meeting, Cabinet approved A.Ritch’s draft Collections
Request for inclusion in the Library’s budget submission. P.Iannuzzi is
working on a draft of the Undergraduate Services section, which will
include extending Moffitt hours, refurbishing the public spaces in Moffitt,
and relocating the Moffitt collection. P.Iannuzzi has scheduled a meeting
with C.Maslach to discuss strategies for undergraduate services. If a
proposal is developed for a multimedia center, drafts will be shared with
Cabinet for review and comment by email. M.Rancer will prepare the Student
Employment Initiative Program (SEIP) section of the budget request. The
final budget request drafts will be approved at next week’s Cabinet meeting
on February 8, before the February 9 deadline for submission.
2. Supplementary Budget Submission (M.Rancer)
The supplementary budget call focuses on administrative workload and new
web services. Cabinet discussed the draft Proposal for a Training
Coordinator for Library Technologies for possible submission as a workload
mitigation initiative and decided that the initiative should focus more on
mitigation of the overall workload in LHRD. A.Jensen and P.Iannuzzi will
rewrite the proposal to target assistance for Library Human Resources with
emphasis on recruitment and retention and a strong training component.
Cabinet will review workload mitigation initiatives and the e-Berkeley
initiatives (to be prepared and presented by B.Hurley) at next week’s
meeting. The supplementary budget submission is due February 15.
3. Doe North Entrance Hours (P.Iannuzzi)
P.Iannuzzi proposed opening the Doe north entrance doors on evenings and
weekends to match hours for the south entrance. With the FSM Café
operational in Moffitt Library, traffic patterns have changed. Expanded
hours will incur increased ongoing expenses for GA and security, but the
costs are manageable. It was noted that the new hours and extra staffing
will provide additional security for the Information Center and exhibits in
the Brown Gallery as well. Cabinet approved, and, beginning February 11,
the north entrance to the Doe Library will be open from Sundays-Thursdays
until 10:00 p.m. to match the hours of the south entrance.
4. Disabled Access to Bancroft (C.Faulhaber)
C.Faulhaber alerted Cabinet to the urgent need to improve disabled access
to the Bancroft Library. Since Bancroft contains information on disability
rights and the Independent Living Movement, more disabled persons are
coming to the library to access these materials. In the short-term, we can
construct better signs and improve staff training, but it is apparent that
a ramp is needed on the east side of the Doe Annex building for improved
disabled access to Bancroft Library’s reading room. F.Yasaki will be
invited to attend Cabinet on February 15 to discuss options for improving
disabled access.
5. Process for Selecting New Chairs for Subject Councils (M.Ternberg)
Cabinet discussed possible length of terms and various options for
selecting new chairs for the subject councils, including nomination
processes, consultations with the three councils, and discussions at
Roundtable. A.Jensen, J.Roberts, and M.Ternberg will develop a description
of responsibilities for council chairs, and the discussion of this topic
will continue at next week’s Cabinet meeting.
