A G E N D A

1. Membership for the FSM Café Educational Programs Committee (P.Iannuzzi)

P.Iannuzzi presented the list of library staff who self-nominated to become
members of the FSM Café Educational Programs Committee. The committee will
provide educational opportunities for Berkeley students through exhibits
and regularly scheduled educational programs based on materials from The
Free Speech Movement Archives. Cabinet appointed the following staff to
serve on the FSM program committee: D.Duer, J.Gatten, S.Koskinen,
B.Quigley, and V.Tate. G.Handman has volunteered to videotape events. In
addition to the four library staff, two faculty members will be selected to
round out the group.

2. Enforcing the Food and Drink Policy (P.Iannuzzi)

Recent incidents in the Library prompted a review of how the Library’s Food
and Drink Policy is enforced. In reviewing the current policy, Cabinet
agreed that the intent of the policy is to ban consumption of food and
drink in the library, and that it is difficult for security staff to
enforce the policy when library staff and patrons are held to different
standards. Cabinet decided that the policy should not be changed. Rather,
library staff will be asked to conceal food and drink in bags or packs to
conform to the policy now enforced for library patrons. Eating and
drinking in the public areas are prohibited for staff and patrons alike,
and library staff are encouraged to cooperate with security staff in
enforcement of the food and drink policy.
[Note: On November 20, M.Rancer and I.Stirling issued a clarification of
the food and drink policy to all library staff by e-mail.]

3. OCC Action Initiatives (T.Leonard)

Cabinet expressed its strong commitment to the organizational renewal
process begun by J.Lowell and to the values identified by the library
through the efforts to-date of the Organizational Culture Committee. After
more careful review and discussion of documents presented by OCC at last
week’s Cabinet meeting, Cabinet decided that P.Iannuzzi and B.Ogden should
meet weekly for the next ten weeks to develop a strategy for organizational
renewal. P.Iannuzzi will update Cabinet weekly on the progress of their
meetings and present concrete recommendations for action initiatives to
move the organization forward in its renewal process. In addition, Cabinet
and OCC will plan to hold a joint strategy meeting.

4. ACRL's Institute for Information Literacy 2001 Immersion
Program (I.Stirling)

I.Stirling presented to Cabinet information on the Institute for
Information Literacy 2001 Immersion Program sponsored by the Association
of College and Research Libraries. The program is scheduled for August
3-8, 2001, and offers intensive training along two tracks. Track I focuses
on librarians as teachers and development of individual instruction skills.
Track II focuses on librarians as program managers for institutional
information literacy programs. Application deadline is December 15,
2000. I.Stirling will put out a call to library academic staff regarding
this professional development opportunity.
