A G E N D A
1. Gifts & Exchange/UC Merced (L.Leighton)
F.Carothers has been asked to serve as a consultant to help develop a gifts and
exchange policy for the library at UC Merced. It is anticipated that the
Merced library collection will be approximately 175,000 volumes on opening
day. Cabinet endorsed the principle of helping to build the UC Merced
collection using UC Berkeley duplicates and Merced's program description for a
core undergraduate collection. Gifts & Exchange will continue to operate the
Library Bookstore to cover its operational costs in the amount $30,000 and give
Berkeley's duplicates to Merced to build its core collection.
2. Discussion on Interviewing the UL Candidates (T.Leonard, M.Ternberg)
On November 1, M.Ternberg distributed by e-mail a list of questions developed
by a Cabinet sub-group. The questions, to be used during the UL interview
process in November and December, were designed to determine the UL
candidate's leadership qualities, management style, and approach to the
challenges facing libraries today.
3. Net Readiness Plan for E-Berkeley (C.Faulhaber)
[See (campus.chance.berkeley.edu/itf/itf.html) ]
The Internet and e-business solutions are expected to fundamentally change UC
Berkeley in the future. The core concept of the "Internet Enterprise
Information Portal for UC Berkeley" is to aggregate and provide access to the
full spectrum of information and services provided by the University and its
business partners. To implement the concept of this E-Berkeley portal of
individualized services, the campus has formed a steering committee that is
working with Cisco Systems to implement campuswide initiatives.
C.Faulhaber presented to Cabinet the October 9 draft "Net Readiness Plan for
E-Berkeley", which itemizes competency development and technology-related
recommendations with specific actions along a timeline for implementation. The
task force's "Roadmap for E-Berkeley" dated October, 2000, itemizes initiatives
in four categories: Active & Ongoing, In Development, In Concept, and In
Dreams. As a member of the implementation task force, C.Faulhaber solicited
suggestions from Cabinet regarding specific library projects to pass along to
the committee. C.Faulhaber will meet with B.Hurley, L.Leighton, A.Ritch, and
I.Stirling to develop a list of library priorities related to e-learning and
recommendations for library/e-business collaborations.
4. Update on the D/M Implementation of Centralized Reference and the
Reorganization Plan (P.Iannuzzi)
[See http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/Admin/ocdomo.pdf ]
After meeting with the Doe-Moffitt unit heads, the centralized reference
reorganization plan was revised and reduced to two options. P.Iannuzzi
distributed organization charts for the two possible options along with
questions about reference services that were sent to Doe-Moffitt staff and
Roundtable for their consideration. Doe-Moffitt staff and Roundtable members
have been invited to attend an Early Bird meeting on November 8, to discuss the
issues surrounding the reorganization. AULs for Collections, Doe-Moffitt, and
Public Services will attend the Early Bird to answer questions. Cabinet
members were also asked to send their questions and comments concering the D/M
reference services and the reorganization plans to P.Iannuzzi. A final
decision is expected by November 15.
5. Weekend NRLF Run (P. Iannuzzi)
Weekend NRLF runs can be paid for with a small amount of money from
Doe-Moffitt funds. The project plan is ready and weekend NRLF runs are
expected to begin in January. In addition, web delivery of articles is planned
for January, 2001.
6. Joint UL/SOPAG Meeting Review (T.Leonard, B.Hurley)
T.Leonard and B.Hurley reported on highlights of the joint UL/SOPAG meeting on
October 26-27, in San Diego. Budget projections for the next few years are
encouraging. The ULs are looking at new ways to repackage library services and
ways of partnering with faculty for electronic scholarship. Cabinet members
were asked to send suggestions to T.Leonard, who will also seek recommendations
from the Academic Senate Library Committee.
7. Library Representative on Computing and Communications Committee
(T.Leonard)
A library representative is needed to provide a professional viewpoint on the
Academic Senate Library Committee on Computers and Communication. LAUC
submitted three nominations, and Cabinet selected G.Handman, head of Media
Resources Center, as the Library's representative. T.Leonard will notify
G.Handman of his appointment.
