budget.]
II. OLD BUSINESS
A. Review of the Council System (J.Lowell)
When the Library’s current council structure was established last year, it was
agreed that an informal review would be conducted after a year to determine if
the structure was working effectively. Cabinet decided that it is time to
conduct that review by soliciting comments about difficulties encountered by
the councils as they attempt to do their work and suggestions for
improvements. The review will also look at the relationships among councils,
their relationships to the various task forces, and the parameters of council
authority. J.Lowell will send out an e-mail requesting comments from all
library staff. A sub-group of Cabinet (L.Leighton, A.Ritch, M.Ternberg) will
review comments sent to the reflector established to gather input. Cabinet
will conduct its evaluation based upon the staff input.
[Send comments addressed to: councrev@library.berkeley.edu with subject line
“Council Review” by August 31, 2000.]
III. NEW BUSINESS
A. New Travel Request Forms (M.Rancer)
On May 25, Cabinet adopted a new “Travel, Training and Development Support
Policy” for library staff effective July 1, 2000. At today’s Cabinet meeting,
M.Rancer distributed samples of the revised “Library
Travel/Training/Development Request” form designed by R.Liu and
K.Starkweather. The new travel request form distinguishes among the various
types of travel addressed by the policy: Professional with LAUC funding;
Professional without LAUC funding; Staff Development; Administrative; and
Collection Development. Cabinet approved the new forms with one additional
change: the estimated expenses and fund sources section will also be itemized
by categories of travel (e.g., professional, staff, administrative, etc.)
B. Transition Issues (J.Lowell)
J.Lowell updated Cabinet on issues relating to the transition of leadership
with his departure on August 31. Prof. Thomas Leonard, a long-time Berkeley
faculty member and former chair of the Senate Library Committee, has been
appointed Interim University Librarian effective September 1. The campus will
launch a national search for a permanent University Librarian, and Prof.
Anthony Newcomb has agreed to chair the search committee. Other members of the
search committee include: Professors G.Breslauer, B.Burnside, E.Gruen,
T.Leonard, C.Maslach, and R.Wilensky; CDL Executive Director R.Lucier, Library
Advisory Board Member S.Wong; and library representatives P.Janes, N.Kobzina,
and J.Wright. In addition, the search committee’s graduate student
representatives will be announced in the fall. More information can be found
at: (www.chance.berkeley.edu/evcp/ULSearch.html)
The Admin group (B.Hurley, P.Iannuzzi, L.Leighton, M.Rancer, A.Ritch,
I.Stirling) has developed a rotating chair structure for Admin, Cabinet, and
Roundtable in J.Lowell’s absence. T.Leonard will join Roundtable, Cabinet, and
Admin meetings during July and August to familiarize himself with the current
issues and operations. Admin will meet with the Organizational Culture
Committee to discuss next steps in the library’s organizational renewal
process.
Next Cabinet Meeting: July 13.
