I. OLD BUSINESS
A. Update on Library Code of Conduct Policy --I.Stirling
I.Stirling reviewed briefly the Library’s Code of Conduct Policy and guidelines
for enforcement.
The policy is located on the library’s web at:
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/AboutLibrary/Staff/PSM/lol75.html
Suggested guidelines for enforcement can be viewed at:
The web policy statement will be revised only slightly by removing the last two
sentences referring to “repeat offenders”. The last two sentences duplicate
information elsewhere in the policy, and this will clarify that even a first
time offense could be subject to sanctions. UCPD has commented that this would
improve the policy document.
B. Billing and Replacement Work Group --A.Ritch
A.Ritch has formed a small working group with G.Ford, L.Mansur, P.Soriano, and
B.Weil, to gather and examine facts about the process for replacing items that
have been missing from the collection for extended periods of time. Cabinet
discussed the inconsistencies across units in the billing and replacement
processes. In some units, repetitious searches have produced extended delays
with many items remaining “on search” too long, while in other units items are
replaced quickly. In a couple of weeks, the working group will present to
selectors the results of their study and suggest ways for accelerating the
process.
C. RLG Report --C.Faulhaber
C.Faulhaber attended the Research Libraries Group annual meeting in New York,
April 29-May 3, on behalf of the UC Berkeley Library. He briefed Cabinet on
the meeting program that was organized around RLG’s three major initiatives:
the cultural materials alliance; long-term retention of digital material; and
enhanced ILL and document delivery mechanisms. C.Faulhaber is UC Berkeley’s
primary contact for the RLG Cultural Materials Alliance, which met in a lengthy
session prior to the annual meeting to discuss policies and procedures and
report on recent developments. Cabinet approved the appointment of M.Proffitt
as Berkeley’s technical contact to the RLG Cultural Materials Alliance, with
responsibility for ensuring that digital materials submitted from Berkeley meet
alliance standards.
D. Continuation of Budget Preparation for 2000/01 --M.Rancer
Discussion of High Priority Budget Items
On April 20, Cabinet created a list of budget actions identified as high
priority. J.Lowell annotated the original list with “action notes” that were
discussed further by Cabinet at today’s meeting. Some items will be
incorporated in the budget call while others have been assigned to small groups
for further development. Cabinet will continue the budget development process
during the next several meetings, with subgroup presentations and the first
draft budget scheduled to be finalized by mid-June. According to the current
budget development schedule, the final draft budget will be presented to
Roundtable on June 22, and the final revisions made and the budget adopted by
Cabinet on June 29.
