A G E N D A

1. Travel Funding --J.Lowell

The current procedure for funding professional travel is as follows. The
LAUC portion of travel funds comes from campus. The LAUC travel funding
allocation varies by the number of individual requests and the total LAUC
budget. Currently, LAUC awards $600 per individual and then solicits
supplemental support from Admin. Much of this year’s professional travel
has already been done, and the travel funding requests await reimbursement.

Cabinet briefly discussed the guidelines currently used by AULs for
providing supplemental support. Typically, each AUL has a predetermined
budget for professional travel, regardless of the number of funding
requests. The AULs, M.Rancer, and B.Hurley will meet to determine this
year’s total allocation for professional development travel. Cabinet
decided that for this year’s travel funding reimbursements, each individual
traveller will be allotted $400 Admin funding (in addition to the $600 from
LAUC), and the AULs will distribute the funds equitably.

Cabinet will determine the process for next year’s travel funding as part
of the overall budget development process.

2. Health Sciences Initiative --J.Lowell

The campus has launched a new health sciences initiative. J.Lowell asked
I.Stirling to take the coordinated lead with the UC Berkeley Health
Sciences Initiative in determining impacts to the Library.

3. Library Development --J. Lowell

L.Braunschweiger has requested to step down from her position as Director
of Development and External Relations with the library, and begin working
60% time effective July 1, 2000 until her retirement in two years. In
addition, K.Craig has accepted a position with the campus central
development office and will leave her library development post effective
March 1, 2000. Library development needs must be structured in light of
these events.

4. RLG Cultural Materials Initiative --C.Faulhaber

Prior to the meeting, C.Faulhaber distributed information regarding the RLG
Cultural Materials Initiative that the UC Berkeley Library has been invited
to join. The initiative proposes to organize an alliance of RLG member
institutions to develop a collective digital resource of cultural
materials. Using digital standards already developed, these cultural
research resources would be accessible through web browsers connecting to
Eureka, the information retrieval interface developed by RLG. The alliance
would also determine and collect appropriate fees and determine a business
model.

Cabinet discussed some of the major issues of concern to the Library (e.g.,
materials available for free through CDL, clarification of “rights”,
withdrawal of content, subscription fees, etc.) Cabinet members were asked
to review the proposal and route any questions and concerns to C.Faulhaber
before the next meeting.

5. Campus Call for Minor Cap Projects --M.Rancer

After a one-year hiatus campus has called for Minor Cap Projects. The
deadline for submission of proposals is February 25. The Library could
submit projects for less than $250,000 having broad public appeal or
impact. Discussions will occur with unit heads regarding possible proposals
to be submitted.
