1. AUL Recruitment Update --J.Lowell

The UL will chair the AUL Screening Committee, which will be comprised of a
Berkeley faculty member plus a representative from each of the following
library groups: Admin, Roundtable, LHRD, LAUC-B, and SDC. The committee
will meet in July, review the applications for all three AUL positions, and
select candidates to be invited for interviews. It is likely that the
interview process will continue throughout the month of August.

2. Library Councils Document --J.Lowell

J.Lowell distributed the latest revision to the Launching the Councils
document that was discussed at Roundtable on June 24. Two remaining issues
involved including Library Assistants on the subject and function councils
and the AULs chairing the councils. J.Lowell recommended that specific
language be added to include Library Assistants in the subject and function
councils membership and that the AULs and CAO serve as chairs for the
function councils. Cabinet approved. J.Lowell will revise and issue the
final document to Roundtable.

3. ChancellorM-^Rs Initiative on Organizational Excellence --J. Lowell

Campus has contracted with Brent D. Ruben, executive director of the Office
of Organizational Quality and Communication Improvement at Rutgers
University, and the Library has been invited to participate in the RutgersM-^R
study of organizational quality and communication improvement. The
RutgersM-^R program usually involves a small group of senior managers in
assessing organizational improvement and strategic planning, but J.Lowell
has asked that the larger Roundtable group participate in the LibraryM-^Rs
assessment. Two dates have been scheduled for the LibraryM-^Rs participation
in the study: Monday, September 13 (all day) and Tuesday, September 14
(morning only). Cabinet approved.

4. Organizational Culture Steering Committee --J.Lowell

On June 4, J.Lowell issued a call to all library staff requesting
self-nominations from those interested in serving on the Organizational
Culture Steering Committee. Cabinet discussed the list of self-nominees
and selected the following representative membership: M.Barone (Systems),
C.Campbell (Public Health), P.Daniels (Technical Services), G.Ford
(LibrarianM-^Rs Office), W.Hanson (Development), S.Mendoza (Music), S.McMahon
(South/Southeast Asia), V.Moon (NRLF), B.Ogden (Preservation), E.Woods
(LibrarianM-^Rs Office/Library Business Services), J.Wright (Teaching
Library). J.Lowell will chair and B.Ogden will co-chair the committee,
which is expected to meet weekly (July-October) to draft a vision process
for a desired organizational culture and present the process to Roundtable
for discussion by November 1.

5. Top 7 Librarian Positions --J.Lowell

As the number one priority, the LibraryM-^Rs budget proposal requested funding
for seven new librarian positions this fiscal year as part of a long-term
mortgaging plan. Earlier in the year, Cabinet decided to choose the seven
most critical librarian positions to be filled this year and await arrival
of the new AULs to make decisions regarding the next seven most critical
positions, funding for which would be included in next yearM-^Rs budget
request. Using RoundtableM-^Rs list of critical needs for librarian
positions, Cabinet members consulted with their unit heads and began
discussing the positions in order to select the first group of seven,
pending approval of the budget request. Cabinet approved the following
four positions: Circulation Head for Doe-Moffitt, an Engineering
Librarian, and two Reference Librarians. The reference librarian positions
will be M-^SplaceholdersM-^T for now, until the Library determines how it wants
to handle Doe-Moffitt reference. Position descriptions will be drafted for
the circulation and engineering positions. Recruitment will begin once
formal approval for the seven positions is received as part of the
LibraryM-^Rs Budget Request response.
