1. SOPAG Meeting Highlights --B.Hurley

--The CDL RFP for a commercially provided fulfillment system to be used by the
Melvyl Request service has been cancelled. The cost/benefit analysis of the
RFP responses indicated that this was not the time to proceed with this
purchase.

--The University Librarians have agreed in principle to expand the Melvyl
Request service to include journal article delivery. Additional implementation
information is being gathered and we expect a final decision from the ULs at
their next meeting.

--UC Berkeley has two representatives, K.Frohmberg and S.Miller, on the newly
formed CDL Task Force on Collaborative Strategies for Archiving Print in the
Digital Environment.

--The TFER2 report recommendation on creating cataloging standards is linked to
the creation of a central catalog agency. SOPAG is organizing a test in which
UCSD will pilot the Melvyl displays.

--Library of Congress is planning to convert their Chinese transliterations to
the Pinyin method from Wade-Giles. SOPAG has formed a committee, suggested by
HOTS, to review the impact this will have on local catalogs and Melvyl.

for catalogers on metadata, including descriptive, structural, and
administrative metadata issues.
