1. Process for Deciding Which Librarian Positions to Fill Using the
Mortgaging Plan
-J.Lowell

The Library's Budget Proposal FY 1999/2000 discussed the development of a
staffing plan to correct functional imbalances throughout the Library.
Cabinet must now decide upon a process for determining which of the most
urgently needed librarian positions will be filled during the next two
fiscal years, under the terms of the mortgaging plan negotiated by the
University Librarian and the Executive Vice-Chancellor. Fourteen new
librarian positions will be filled during the next two years. After
discussion of various options, Cabinet decided to begin by reviewing the
original list of librarian positions submitted by Roundtable members in
January. The AULs will meet with unit heads within their resource groups
to identify the seven most critical positions to be filled this fiscal
year. The rationale for selection should include the position's
librarywide impact on public service. B.Krell will collect the
recommendations prior to the meeting on June 17, at which time the topic
will come before Cabinet for a decision.

2. Cabinet Meeting to Discuss Library Master Plan -J.Lowell

Since key members in Doe-Moffitt are unable to attend an extended Cabinet
session on May 27 to discuss the policy issues surrounding the Library
Master Plan, the topic will be discussed another date and time (TBA) when
constituent parties can be present. In the meantime, Cabinet members are
requested to send B.Krell their recollections regarding past principles
governing space assignments in the Library.

3. Staff Development Committee Appointments -J.Lowell

Terms expire this year for Staff Development Committee members
A.Concepcion, J.Fong and S.Williams. Cabinet recommended L.Mascorro and
C.Olen for the two open staff positions and D.Jan for the open librarian
appointment on the committee.

4. Farewell Luncheon for Tom Havens -J.Lowell

Cabinet will hold a farewell luncheon on Friday, June 11 for Tom Havens,
who has resigned his position as director of the East Asian Library and
will join the faculty at Northeastern University.
