ANNOUNCEMENTS

--Margaret McCormick and Michael Rancer are recipients of the Excellence in
Management Award this year. Recipients are nominated by their staff, and this
year’s award recognizes those supervisors and managers whose leadership fosters
community on the Berkeley campus.

--This semester’s Teaching Library Faculty Seminars
(www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/FacultySeminars.html) are receiving a
high level attendance, since the time between the announcement of the Seminars

WebCT, along with an array of other courses taught by Library staff.

A G E N D A

1. Use of Personal Audio Devices by Staff and Student Employees --J.Dost,
L.Leighton

After a Cabinet discussion on March 18 regarding use of personal audio devices
by staff and student employees in the Library, J.Dost and L.Leighton asked
other campus departments about their policies on the use of personal audio
devices. Some departments permitted it; some did not. Cabinet agreed with
the recommendation to allow use of audio devices on a case-by-case basis. Both
the Employee Handbook and the Student Handbook will be revised to read:
“Radios and tape players are not permitted for personal use in the public areas
of the UCB libraries. Use of radios in non-public areas varies from one
library unit to another. Please consult your supervisor regarding the use of
personal audio equipment in your unit. Supervisors may deny the use of
personal audio devices if the work of the unit is negatively impacted.”

2. Volunteers in the Library --J.Dost, L.Leighton

Cabinet discussed the issue of using volunteers in the Library at its meeting
on March 18. J.Dost and L.Leighton inquired about existing campus policy in
other campus departments where volunteers are used on a regular basis. Cabinet
decided that it is a topic for broader discussion. J.Dost will prepare a
proposal on the use of volunteers in the Library for presentation at a future
meeting of Roundtable.

3. Update: Policy Issues Related to Patrons Viewing Pornography at Public
PCs

--M.Rancer

After the Roundtable discussion on March 25, M.Rancer and I.Abalos consulted
with other campus departments to identify some basic guidelines to aid library
staff in responding to patron complaints. Campus General Counsel recommended
posting signs stipulating that the library public service workstations are for
“academic research” purposes. A brief Library policy is being drafted for
presentation to Circulation Supervisors, Roundtable, and Cabinet.
