AGENDA

1. Library Master Plan Issues --J.Lowell, F.Yasaki

J.Lowell, M.Rancer and F.Yasaki met on April 21 to discuss the most critical
issues of the Doe-Moffitt space planning. The areas along the south corridor on
the first floor of Doe (e.g., the Morrison Room, South/Southeast Asia Library,
and the space currently occupied by Systems) and the HAS areas on the second
floor of Doe are of chief concern at this time. F.Yasaki will discuss details
of the space plans at a future Cabinet meeting.

2. FY99 Operating Budget Surplus --K.Frohmberg

Cabinet discussed how this year’s operating budget surplus would be managed.
In January, Cabinet decided that salary savings should accrue in a central pool
to be managed according to librarywide priorities as part of the Library budget
planning process. M.Rancer will announce this year’s fiscal closing deadlines,
which have been accelerated due to complications with BFS. After fiscal
closing when the operating budget surplus figures have been determined, Cabinet
will review and decide how to allocate the funds. J.Lowell and M.Rancer will
prepare a statement regarding the principles to be applied in the allocation of
surplus funds.

3. Library Public Services Staff Information on the Web
--C.Faulhaber

Bancroft Library has encouraged its public services staff to create web pages
to personalize Bancroft public services. Cabinet discussed privacy issues and
the creation of personal web pages that contain appropriate professional
information. Cabinet decided to review the policy guidelines established by
the UC San Diego library to aid its staff in creating personal web pages with
professional information and links to subject specialties.

4. Extension of Contract with Katherine Mitchell --J.Lowell

Cabinet decided to extend the Library’s contract with Katherine Mitchell, who
has been working with the Library on organizational development activities.
K.Mitchell is currently working with the Science libraries and other library
units may find her services useful. J.Dost will put out a call for potential
projects and develop a project list with related costs to bring back to
Cabinet.

5. Opening of the Doe North Reading Room for Spring Finals --F.Yasaki

Construction work has begun in Moffitt Library to accommodate the temporary
move of the Environmental Design Library from Wurster Hall. Closing the 5th
floor of Moffitt for renovation will eliminate approximately 250 study seats
during finals. The North Reading Room of Doe Library will be opened on a
temporary basis during Spring finals to offset the loss of the Moffitt study
space. The North Reading Room will not be staffed, serving as study space
only, and will close again after finals.
