1. 24-hour Library Issue --J.Lowell

Last week, J.Lowell met with two student representatives of ASUC at their
request, on the subject of keeping Moffitt Library open around the clock.
The students proposed a pilot project to gather data on Library usage.
J.Lowell indicated to the students that it was not an appropriate use of
library funds to pay for a 24-hour study hall, but that if other campus
funds could be found the Library could consider this issue in greater
depth. L.Leighton and F.Yasaki will provide J.Lowell with previously
compiled cost and usage figures, and E.Meltzer will provide background
information on issues discussed in meetings with students last year.

2. Calendar for Maslach Survey, Vision Process and User/Availability Study
--B.Ogden

At its January 22 meeting, Roundtable unanimously agreed to pursue a job
stress and burnout study in the Library with Prof. Maslach, who will work
with us to develop benchmark measurements this Spring. The next step
involves selection of a team of 8-12 library staff to develop library
specific terminology for Prof. MaslachM-^Rs standard questionnaire. After
discussion, it was decided that a call should go out to library staff for
self-nominations. Cabinet will make the final decision regarding team
composition, representative of the larger population and including both
management and staff. Roundtable will advocate for the process and help
ensure completion of the questionnaires.

The approximate timeline for the Maslach study is as follows: March -
select team; April - team meets to review questionnaire and develop
Library terminology; May 1-15 - staff completes questionnaires; May 16 -
June 30 - C. Maslach analyzes data; July 1 - C.Maslach submits report to
J.Lowell.

The Maslach survey will be coordinated with a Library-wide vision process,
a user survey, and a materials availability study, all of which will lead
to implementation planning, for which the following calendar was proposed:

Jan - June 99
* implement Maslach survey
* plan and launch Library-wide mission and vision process
(a task force of Roundtable members to write a charge)
* plan availability study
* plan user survey

July - Dec 99
* Library-wide mission and vision process launched
* design and implement response plan to Maslach survey
* administer user survey (assuming funding)
* administer availability study (assuming funding)

Jan - June 00
* plan initial actions to align services with outcome of user survey,
availability study, and Maslach survey

Jul - Dec 00?
* re-implement Maslach survey

3. CDL-DL Strategies Forum: UCB Representatives --J.Lowell

The CDL is hosting a northern regional forum for UC library staff on March
24, in Oakland, to share information about digital library goals,
strategies, and activities across UC. Subsequent to the original call for
fifteen participants from each campus, CDL was able to provide six
additional positions for Berkeley. On February 25, Cabinet decided to
select BerkeleyM-^Rs participants through a self-nomination process based upon
departmental distribution. On March 1, J.Lowell issued a call to all
library staff requesting nominations. After consideration by Cabinet on
how best to distribute the extra positions, the following twenty-one
representatives were selected:

(3) Humanities & Area Studies - Michaelyn Burnette, Myrtis Cochran, James
Spohrer
(3) Social Sciences - Suzanne Calpestri, Beth Sibley, Milt Ternberg
(3) Sciences - Katie Frohmberg, Jean McKenzie, Beth Weil
(2) Teaching Library - Gary Handman, Pat Maughan
(1) Interlibrary Services - Charlotte Rubens
(2) Systems - Ralph Moon, Alvin Pollock
(1) Bancroft - Tim Hoyer
(2) East Asian Library - Jean Han, Yuki Ishimatsu
(1) Technical Services - Rebecca Green
(1) Information Systems & Technology - Tom Duncan
(1) Development - Louise Braunschweiger
(1) NRLF - Scott Miller

Attendees will be notified of their selection, and the participant list
will be given to CDL by March 15.
