1. "Save America's Treasures" Grant Options -L.Leighton & B.Ogden

The Department of Interior has announced a $30 million program to suppport
historic preservation and conservation work on historic places, properties,
artifacts, collections, monuments, and works of art. The Federal Save
America's Treasures Program is a multi-year effort for projects with
national significance with awards ranging from $50,000 to $3 million. A
50/50 match is required for participation, and applications must be
received by IMLS no later than February 1.

Barclay provided background information on past preservation funding and
suggested we consider portions of our collections that might be deemed
cultural icons of the nation. Suggestions from the group included:
overland narratives, Gold Rush documents, Yosemite, Sierra Club papers,
railroads. Lee will pursue further with Bancroft Library, soliciting ideas
from Charles Faulhaber and Bancroft curators.

2. Binding Processes -L.Leighton

Last year, the binding budget was reduced to $600,000 from $700,000 to save
money; the cost savings was achieved by nearly eliminating binding
monographs on receipt. Admin discussed restoring funding in order to resume
binding monographs on receipt and recommended to Cabinet that a) this year
$100,000 in book replacement funds be allocated to Preservation to
supplement the binding budget for that purpose, and b) next year the
binding budget be reviewed for complete funding from 19900 funds. Cabinet
approved these recommendations.

3. SOPAG Report -B.Hurley

PIR (patron initiated requesting) goes live January 20. Debuting with the
CDL, "Request" is a new service whereby UC faculty, graduate students, and
staff can easily request material, found in the Melvyl library catalog but
held by another campus, with a click of a web button. Charlotte Rubens and
Aija Kanbergs will be sending out flyers and are planning an Early Bird
presentation for mid-February. The next priority will be to support
journal articles with "Request" technology.

UC Berkeley Library will participate in the long-term planning effort to
replace Melvyl. Two options now under consideration are broadcast
searching and use of a commercial system. Bernie Hurley and Ralph Moon
will coordinate the Library's response to the survey on system specifications.

4. CalAgenda Update -B.Hurley

CalAgenda, the electronic calendaring system now in use by IST and other
campus departments, will begin Phase 1 implementation in the Library.
David Wong (Systems) and Nona Mikkelsen (Librarian's Office) will be in
charge of installation and training respectively. Cabinet members and
selected calendar/room schedulers will be the first to go online.

5. Evaluation Liaisons for CDL -B.Hurley

Pat Maughan is Berkeley's liaison working with Beryl Glitz (UCLA) and John
Ober (CDL) to create evaluation workshops and design focus groups to get
initial feedback on CDL collections and services. CDL will hold an
evaluation training workshop for northern campuses. Cabinet reviewed the
list of nominees to attend the workshop and conduct Spring focus group
sessions providing feedback from the Berkeley campus. Bernie will report
back to Pat on the seconded nominees.

6. Giant Book Sale for Cal Day in April -J.Dost

Janice suggested inviting nearby book vendors (Cody's, Moe's) to join the
Library in a book sale on Cal Day in April. Cabinet expressed some
reservations about holding such an event. Major concerns included faculty
perspective, donor relations, effort required to organize, and the short
time frame. As a next step, Janice will contact various book vendors to
determine their interest before further plans are developed. Janice will
contact campus Cal Day reps for their advise and counsel.

7. Links to the Bookstore -M.Rancer

The University has signed an exclusive 10-year contract with Follett
College Books to operate the ASUC retail outlets. Mike presented a
proposal to Cabinet recommending that the Library create a website link to
the Bear Student Store. The Library would receive a percentage of gross
sales on purchases made through Library links. Although such an
arrangement has the verbal endorsement of campus administrators, Mike will
discuss the proposal with Jerry for Roundtable discussion and/or Senate
Library Committee notification.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

--Fire Marshall scheduled testing of the fire alarm without advance
notification to PD&C or the Library. Mike sent a message to all Library
staff (see allusers e-mail 1/15) regarding the next round of testing.
Library has requested that future testing be done 5:00-7:00 a.m. prior to
normal work hours.

--Xerox purchased CDT and has now contracted with a Sharp dealer for
servicing of our copy machines with no preventative maintenance or parts
replacement. Since the CDT contract contained no penalty for breach of
contract, negotiations will continue with Xerox regarding on-going
maintenance for our copy equipment.

--The Library is planning a non-monetary raffle for Cal Day with Library
card and Mark Twain t-shirt as suggested prizes. Send other suggestions to
Aija Kanbergs.

--Humanities Graduate Service has moved to 208 Doe Library.

--Ralph Moon is on the campus task force on network funding.

--Bernie Hurley is on a campus Y2K committee.

--BAKER now provides electronic document delivery service through the web.
