II. New Faculty Lecture Series Proposal

Carlos presented his proposal to restart the "New Faculty Lecture Series"
which ran from 1993 through 2003. In the past this series showcased two to
three new faculty members (from new assistant professors to well-known
scholars new to the Berkeley campus) usually in the humanities and social
sciences; lectures were attended by anywhere from 30 to 125 people in the
Morrison Library. Funding was generally shared with the department.
Although the series involved a great deal of work on behalf of the
librarian coordinating the lecture, it was generally felt to be a positive
experience that helped to develop trust and goodwill among the faculty, the
department and the library.

Collections Council expressed support for this program and suggested that
in addition to producing a printed version of the lecture, that the series
become a part of the CDL eScholarship Publishing Initiative. It was also
suggested that funding for the series might be available through the
Morrison endowment in addition to collections funds.

ACTION: Carlos will draft an announcement about the series. Bernie will
work with the Digital Publishing Group to explore digitizing the back
issues of the New Faculty Lecture Series (17 issues) and creating a web
presence. Once this is done, Margaret will coordinate with CDL to include
them in the eScholarship Repository.

III. Dilib requests (none)

IV. Collections Statement template

At the August 30 meeting, Susana proposed that the Library begin the
process of updating collection statements. Ann volunteered to work with
Susana to draft of a proposed collections statement template to which they
received minor comments. ACTION: Ann will incorporate suggested changes
into the draft template and resend it to Collections Council for reps to
bring back to their Subject Councils for further discussion and approval.

V. Budget

Follow up to the discussion brought up at the 8/30 Collection Council
meeting, in which it was announced that campus administration has made it
apparent that the substantial, unspent balances the Library carries in both
the AUL Reserve and in individual selector funds (as a whole) have weakened
the Library's argument for new, permanent collections funding. This
situation merits broader discussion and examination to determine how we can
spend-down our balances in a productive, strategic and coordinated manner.
Bernie said that he and Gail are analyzing the carry-forwards on a
fund-by-fund basis in order to help identify patterns and/or find
reasonable explanations. After the analysis, we can begin the discussion of
what policies and procedures the Library needs to implement to ensure that
selectors stay within a certain target range and manage appropriate
balances. ACTION: Bernie and Gail will continue analysis.
