Patty shared her expectations of Collections Council with the group.
She would appreciate members of the council to share their view
point, give opinions and express differences. It's very important to
her to hear different perspectives. Ultimately she will make the
final decision, but she wants the decision to be as informed as
possible and to have the benefit of our experience and perspective.
1. Announcements
B. Ogden announced that a decision had been made by CDL to redirect
UC Preservation funds to Digital Preservation. CDL will direct this.
UCB used to receive $40,000 from CDL. This was used by
Preservation staff to fund our brittle books, missing pages, and
whole item replacements. CDL will direct this. UCB used to receive
$40,000 from CDL. This was used by Preservation staff to fund our
brittle books, missing pages, and whole item replacements. He is
requesting $40,000 from Collections funding to make up the loss.
Patty suggested that there are three possible funding sources:
collections, operations, or Preservation endowments. Discussion will
continue.
Patty is expecting selectors to keep within their budget this year.
If selectors are overspent, next year's funds will be encumbered.
She is not planning to bail out funds which are overspent.
2. DILIB and the 3 year budget
CC continued to discuss how decisions should be made about what the
DILIB should fund. In the past decisions were made organically.
The group agreed that we must fund inflation for DILIB. The pros and
cons of having DILIB vs. a selector fund pay for various resources
was discussed.
DILIB Pays
Pros: CDL Committments protected
Cons: No one is responsible, difficult to make cuts
Selector Pays
Pros: Accountability and Responsibility (ownership), selector makes decision
Cons:Too many selectors involved
Patty asked subject councils to discuss what circumstances selectors
imagined would be used for DLIB funds.
4. Net Library
Due to the fact that NetLibrary has filed Chapter Six bankruptcy
proceedings, we are not adding any additional Net Library titles at
this time.
5. A&I Transition Margaret Phillips
For the latest information on the status of the CDL database
transitions, see http://www.cdlib.org/news/databasestatus.html . A
Town Hall meeting in which members of the CDL team will update
library staff on the transition is scheduled for May 16. Since the
responsibility for promoting and publicizing the CDL transitions to
faculty rests with selectors, Margaret is interested in suggestions
on how she and/or the CDL can provide support to selectors in their
efforts.
6. CDC meeting
CC reviewed the proposed guidelines for the addition of new titles
to CDL e-journal publisher packages. It is the responsibility of
selectors to notify Collections Core Services if they are adding
titles to the Berkeley collection which have a relationship to an
existing CDL e-journals package. Our CDL acquisitions liaison will
then notify CDL.
7. American Chemical Society Archive.
The council agreed UCB should acquire the ACS archive. It will be
funded from Chem funds. This will be a CDL Tier 1 purchase.
8. Collections-related reports from other Groups.
The future of the CDL directory will be discussed at Sciences Council
to provide input to Bernie for SOPAG.
