1. Announcements

3. Spending down y-funds
4. YBP shelfready proposal
5. Other issues from Arts/Humanities Council
6. Electronic Resource Librarian interviews
1. Announcements:
- The minutes from the last meeting were approved.
- As a clarification to the NetLibrary discussion at the last meeting, it
was noted that selectors could add selected titles to UCB's NetLibrary
collection if requested by faculty; selectors should consult with A. Ritch
if any questions.
- Library administration has approved funding for travel to the CDL
Resource Liaisons meeting in April.
- It was noted that the planned carryover of collection funds may be eroded
if new serial spending is too robust; R. Green will run a report on new
serial costs by the next Collections Council meeting.
- A. Ritch announced that the campus has just provided some additional
one-time funds for collections ($653,000 to The Library & $41,700 to the
Law Library).
- Blackwell (Books) has announced a 1.5% shipping charge (up 1%). It is
not clear yet what the implications are or what alternatives we might have.
Once details are known, R. Green will review the situation with A. Ritch.
- An effort is being made to consolidate orders for major microform sets
with IDC (a microform vendor), in order to achieve maximum discounts.
- CDL will be paying the incremental charges to add the full text
supplement to PCI (Periodicals Contents Index).
- LUNA Insight software (for image distribution) has been licensed for the
UCB campus by the Museum Informatics Project. A. Ritch is the point person
from JSC who will be designing a process to test it from the perspective of
serving images to the other UC campuses.
2. Replacement Fund Adjustments
Recently, Jim Gordon has been reviewing the expenditures for replacements
(including both x-funds & bilrep ) over the last 30 months. As a whole,
approximately $5,000/month is spent on replacements. It was noted that,
while some x-funds have been entirely expended, there is very little
activity on others -- reflecting, no doubt, the fact that theft and
replacement activity can vary widely by discipline, selector & circulation
staff time, and the difficulty of fulfilling some orders (eg, those
requiring photocopy or film replacement). J. Gordon has proposed that the
allocations to particular x-funds be adjusted to better match the
expenditure patterns. There was some discussion on how best to do this.
He will come back to Collections Council with some proposed models, so that
the specific implications can be reviewed.
3. Spending down y-funds:
It is a goal to have the y-funds spent out by the end of this fiscal year.
However, a number of funds have substantial balances left. A. Ritch will
send a message to all selectors announcing the goal of expending the
remaining y-funds and specific messages to those fund managers with
balances of more than $5,000 or 65% of the amount carried over into 2000-01.
4. YBP Shelfready Proposal
At the meeting of the Arts/Humanities Council last week, it was clear that
there are still some issues to be resolved before the proposal to accept
shelfready books from Yankee (YBP) can be implemented. Therefore, the
project is still in the planning stages.
5. Other issues from the Arts/Humanities Council meeting:
There was a report on the discussion at the last Arts/Humanities Council
meeting, at which both technical services staff and selectors were present.
A number of difficulties arising from the multiplicity, non-integration,
and age of our various systems related to the acquisitions process were
raised and reviewed at that meeting.
6. Electronic Resource Librarian interviews:
Interviews will be held in early March for this position. Selectors are
invited to attend the open session (including presentations by the
candidates on why e-resources are difficult to handle). These open
sessions will be from 11:15-noon in Room 303 Doe on March 6 (candidate
Margaret Phillips) and March 7 (candidate Nancy Kushigian). Selectors with
specific questions they would like covered, but who are unable to attend
these sessions, may send them to A. Ritch.
Next meeting: March 20, 2001
