CAG Minutes of 11/4/98

Collections Advisory Group
Minutes - November 4, 1998

Present: B. Weil (chair), B. Glendenning (recorder) S. Calpestri, C.
Wanat, K. Wayne
Absent: P. Bishof
Ex Officio: K. Frohmberg, B. Kornstein, J. Spohrer, A. Barone
Guests: R. Green

1. Announcements: B. Weil sent a message to L. Leighton indicating that
CAG and IBS would be preparing a joint (one-time funding) proposal for
distribution of IBS data to selectors.

2. Minutes of the Oct. 21 meeting were approved with minor corrections.

3. Academic Press IDEAL DEAL
K. Frohmberg distributed a proposed contract for Academic's journals full
text. Because 5 other UC campuses have already signed with Academic and
that contract is good for one more year, UCB would be forced to sign on
under that agreement and our ability to negotiate for other options and
price breaks is severely constrained. Selectors and users comments
indicate that while coverage is good, response time, downloading time and
maneuverability in their system is poor. Academic's contract with UC will
be up for renegotiation with CDL next year. KF will discuss the issue
further with CDL and share concerns about response time with Academic and
report back to CAG at a later date.

4. Review of Resource Group Allocations
K. Frohmberg, J. Spohrer, and B. Kornstein distributed spread sheets
reflecting selector requests and allocations they are able to fund out of
their Resource Groups allocations. KF was able to fund about 90% of what
her selectors had requested. JS was able to fund about 1/3 of the amount
his selectors had requested. BK was able to fund 100% of the amount
selectors had requested with the exception of one fund which requested a
large permanent increase based on B. Hurley's SIN factors. BK deferred
funding that request based on BH's plans for further study of the SIN
calculations. CAG approved the AUL's recommendations and requested that
they be sent on to Penny Abell.

All three AUL's discussed the processes by which the allocations were
decided. CAG recommended that for next year's allocation process all
selectors in each resource group share information about their proposed
requests ahead of time, and that Resource Groups meet to discuss the
funding process as they did this year.

Next meeting: Nov. 18, 1998
