Library Binding Manual - UC Standard for Spine Marking

  1. General Guidelines

    1. Use all upper-case letters in the author, title and mid-spine areas.

    2. Use upper case letters in the call number area, except for shelving designations such

as "f" for folio, "t" for tiny or eccentric classification systems, and for cutter

      number suffixes.

    3. Use periods followed by spaces where necessary to separate elements, i.e., PT.2, P.

      1-32, C.2, or for series, e.g., N.S.

    4. The Bindery applies standard spacing between spine elements based on the thickness

of the book and the size of type used.

    5. Shelving locations ("imprint") must be printed at the bottom of the call number.

Call numbers may include both upper case and lower case letters when required by the library in the classification numbers and in the cutter numbers. Binding slips must be typed correctly, with lower case letters where it is needed for folios, tinies, etc., in order for the Bindery to stamp spines correctly.

Examples of lower case letters preceding the classification number are:

    x

    f, ff, fff

    t

    k

Example of a cutter number with lower case letter appended:

    C89a
