Periodical Spine Abbreviations

Binder's titles, which are shorter than the official bibliographic title, are printed on the spines of books for two reasons.  Binder's titles may be truncated versions of the bibliographic title, and may include abbreviations.  Abbreviation and truncation are necessary to fit long titles on thin books, and to reduce the cost of binding by reducing the amount of spine lettering.

Please shorten titles and abbreviate long words in binder's titles whenever possible.  For example, as stated in the BPM Binding Manual, English language articles (a, an, the) should be omitted from binding titles.

To reduce errors and keep costs down, abbreviations of the following commonly used title words have been standardized.  Standardizing abbreviations reduces the amount of time bindery workers spend changing our records each time a different abbreviation is used, reduces errors, and makes it easier for patrons to identify the titles they want.  For the following commonly used long words please use the abbreviations that are already used by most units:

Spine abbreviations

administration admin
archaeological archaeol
architectural  arch
association assoc
bulletin bull
conference conf
contemporary contemp
development devel
historical hist
information info
international int'l
journal j
library lib
philosophy phil
psychology psych
science sci
If necessary and if there is room on the spine, units retain the option of spelling any of these words out, although this will reduce the savings we might accrue from abbreviation.  If the word is not abbreviated on the binding slip, it will not be abbreviated by the Bindery.  If a different abbreviation is used for one of these words, the standard abbreviation will be substituted.
