Unit of Binding

** The Unit of Binding and the Binding Delay (see below) can only be edited from within the checkin card parameters, not the checkin record.  To get there from the checkin record which you are in, key "c" for checkin card, "m" for maintenance mode options, then "a" to view/edit the card parameters. **
This field contains the number of issues that are to be bound together.  It defaults to the number of issues in a volume, but can be changed to any grouping that you want.  Although you cannot edit this field from within the binding module, you can override it by selecting the appropriate range of boxes for your
bindable unit. If binding is not required (e.g. Comes bound, Current only, Call # Varies), key a ZERO in this field.

Binding Delay

This field indicates the number of unbound issues that should remain on the shelves when a group is sent to the bindery. E.g., if BINDING DELAY=1, the system will not prompt you to bind until 1 issue beyond the bindable unit has been received.  The system default=1. You can override this field within the binding module by selecting the specific range of boxes you want to bind.  The Binding Delay is necessary if you intend to produce pull-slips.  For instructions on this, see Pull-Slips.

Checkin Boxes

In order to produce a binding slip, there must be checkin boxes on the card representing the issues you want to bind. Depending on the binding format selected, data from the volume, issue, and cover date fields are
identified and printed in the appropriate areas of the binding slip.  You do not need to collapse or edit checkin boxes in order to produce an accurate binding slip. Within the binding module, you are able to manipulate the display of volume, issue and date information through the 1ST and 2ND VOLUME/COVER DATE fields.  Any editing done through the binding module affects only the binding slip production and does not update the checkin card.
Exception: If the cover date is in the volume field (e.g., 1992:1), move
the date from the volume field to the cover date field prior to using
the binding module.
Generating a binding slip automatically makes the following changes to the checkin box if you "make changes permanent": Since the GLADIS V/C is the authoritative place to record when titles are out for binding, it is optional whether or not the "TO BIND" checkin boxes are retained or not.  Some units delete them once their materials are sent, and others delete them upon return.
Exception:  If the title you are binding is a serials received title (RLOC="s"), please make sure there is a decent history trail of "ARRIVED" issues before deleting boxes.  A decent history trail will depend on the publication schedule for a particular title (e.g. weekly, quarterly, monthly, etc.).  If you are binding right up to the next "EXPECTED" box, keep your "TO BIND" boxes until some more issues arrive.  It is a good idea to change the status to "BOUND" (without changing the transaction date) when your materials return if you are unable to delete them at this point.  The next time you bind, you should be able to delete these "BOUND" boxes.

Special Categories

Multiple Series

Titles marked by SERIES require 2 BINDINFO FIELDS. Only the 1st BINDINFO prints on the binding slip.

1st BINDINFO:
Always code as follows:
FORMAT = 2
BDES = SER.
e.g., 2\BUCK$RED$SER.

2nd BINDINFO:
Key the specific series and the secondary marking designation
(e.g., V., NO.)
e.g., SER.3$NO.

These titles will always require editing of the FIRST & SECOND VOLUME/COVER DATE FIELDS in the binding module.

Mylar and Pam Binds

Although binding slips are not required for mylar and pam binds, the BINDINFO field is used to record the type of binding (MYLAR, PAM) and binding designation (e.g., V., NO., DATE).

Units that want to produce binding slips for these categories should also add the appropriate binding format to the BINDINFO field and input a BINDTITLE.

e.g., Mylar marked by date: 2\MYLAR$DATE
Pam marked by volume: 8\PAM$V.
Comes Bounds Titles

Although these titles do not require binding, a BINDINFO field should be input to record the marking pattern (e.g., V., NO., DATE) to assure that volumes are consistently marked and that the checkin pattern of the card
is set up correctly. Omit the other subfields of the BINDINFO field.

Bind on Receipt

Add a CHECK NOTE (if RLOC=direct) or a LOCAL NOTE (if RLOC=S,D,E):
