POLICY FOR PRINTING LABELS

Policy on label printing varies according to each receiving unit due to equipment constraints and other factors.

RLOC = DIRECT

RLOC = S, D, or E

STANDARDS FOR LABEL PLACEMENT

  1. Check-in the piece.
  2. If prompted, print label.
  3. Mark as follows:
LABEL TYPE PARTIAL FILEMARKING LOCATION MARKING
a NO NO
b NO NO
c NO YES
d NO NO
e NO NO
f NO YES
g NO YES
h NO NO
n NO YES

4. Affix label(s) to the front cover of the piece accordingly:

a. Place Spine label in the upper left-hand corner.

b. Whenever possible, place the label in an area that is free of all writing and pictures.

c. If there is no free space, it is OK to place the label over a picture. When situating a label over a picture, please be mindful not to cover the center of the picture or such things as faces, etc.

d. If you must place the label over some writing, and you have a choice between placing it over the title or over a headline referring to an article within the periodical, place the label over the headline.

e. If there is an article on the front page however, then and only then should the label be placed over the title of the piece.

f. A label may be situated vertically instead of horizontally if it would otherwise obstruct the text of an article.

g. Do not cover up dates and/or volume designation with the call number label. The label should be placed below this data.

Note: The most important thing to remember is never to place the labels over bibliographic information (title, volume/issue numbers, date, etc.). Only in the case of the labels possibly obstructing the text of an article, should said labels be placed over bibliographic data.
