INNOPAC Binding Table of Contents

Bind Slips

BEFORE USING THE BINDING MODULE, certain binding data must already have been input to the INNOPAC checkin record using the UPDATE program (see pre-binding). Except where otherwise noted, this data cannot be edited or over-ridden directly through the binding module.  Because of display limitations within the binding module (e.g., BINDTITLE does not display), it is recommended that you view the checkin record in the UPDATE program before going into the binding module

Logon

O <ORDERING and receiving subsystem>

B <BIND serials>
Initials <return>
Password <return>
S <SEND issues to bindery (print binding slips)>
P <Send issues to bindery & PRINT binding slips>
N <Do not create a file (this is something that may be used at a later

<Date items will be sent to bindery?>
Hit <return> to use today's date
<What serial do you want to send to the bindery?>
You will usually search by ISSN (i), title (t),
author (a), or checkin record number (.c).
The checkin card for the title will then display on the screen.

Selecting the bindable unit

In most cases, the system will prompt you to bind certain boxes based on the unit of binding in the card parameters. E.g., "Bind boxes 1 to 4".  If the system-prompted binding unit is incorrect (or if the system does not prompt you at all for specific boxes) you may override the unit of binding in the card parameters:

Key C <CHANGE boxes selected>
Give the new beginning box number <return>
Give the new ending box number <return>
This action does not change the checkin card parameters.

Once the correct bindable unit is established:

Key B <Send to BINDERY & print slip>

Inserting a note

The system will then prompt: <Enter binding slip note?>
You may key a note that will print on the binding slip in the BINDINFO note area. However, this action does not create a BINDINFO field in the checkin record; the system-prompted note is retained only as a box-specific NOTE in each checkin box for the bindable unit.
If no note is necessary, hit <return>

First Volume and Cover Date Format

The system will now display 3 lines of data for the <First volume and cover date format on column 1>:

e.g. Line 1 V. 1
Line 2 1988
Line 3 --

This data prints at the top and mid-spine areas of the binding slip as determined by the binding format selected. See examples.

If the prompted data is incorrect:

<Above data OK?> N
Select the line number that needs correction.
Key the correct text for that line.

Repeat this process until all lines have been corrected. This editing has no effect on the checkin card; only the binding slip format is affected.

When all data is correct:
<Above data OK?> Y

Second Volume and Cover Date Format

The system will now display 3 lines of data for the <Second volume and cover date format on column 1>:

e.g. Line 1 V. 1
Line 2 --
Line 3 --

This data is the spine marking which prints immediately after the call number in the lower portion of the binding slip. See examples

<Above OK?> Y/N
Editing techniques are the same as those described above for <First volume and cover date format>.

Examples of First and Second Volume/Cover Date Formats

The following sample binding slip illustrates the 3 areas of the binding slip that are controlled by the FIRST and SECOND VOLUME/COVER DATE fields. The top and mid-spine areas print from the FIRST VOLUME/COVER DATE. The bottom (or call number area) prints from the SECOND VOLUME/COVER DATE. These 2 fields each consist of 3 LINES, which are defined according to the binding format selected.

The following examples illustrate the correct coding of the "FIRST and SECOND VOLUME/COVER DATE FORMATS" for various binding designations and formats. Also included are the positions where this information prints on the binding slip and the most common types of editing that will be necessary to adjust the system-supplied values for these fields.

FOR TITLES MARKED BY VOLUME OR NUMBER, the INNOPAC system will usually have already supplied the correct values in these fields.

EXCEPTIONS: You will need to edit Line 2 of the "FIRST VOLUME AND COVER DATE FORMAT" in the following situations:
TITLES MARKED BY VOLUME
    1ST VOLUME/COVER DATE 2ND VOLUME/COVER DATE

FORMAT=8: Line 1: V. 10 (top) V. 1 (bottom)

  Line 2: ---- ---- ----
  Line 3: ---- ---- ----

*It is not necessary to change "No." to "NO." The Bindery will mark the volumes according to the UCB standard "NO."

TITLES MARKED BY DATE

Titles marked by date will often need online editing to achieve the following results.
Be sure to:

    1ST VOLUME/COVER DATE 2ND VOLUME/COVER DATE
FORMAT=2: Line 1: 1988 (top) 1988 (bottom)
  Line 2:  ----  ----  ----  ----
  Line 3: ----  ----  ----  ----

  Line 1: JAN-JUNE (top) JAN-JUNE (bottom)
  Line 2:  1988  (top)  1988  (bottom)
  Line 3:  ----  ----  ----  ----

  Line 1:  1988-89 (top) 1988-89 (bottom)
  Line 2:  ---- ----  ---- ----
  Line 3:  ---- ----  ---- ----

  Line 1: 1986/87-  (top) 1986/87-  (bottom)
  Line 2: 1988/89 (top) 1988/89 (bottom)
  Line 3: ----  ---- ----  ----

  Line 1: 1988  (top)  1988 (bottom)
  Line 2: ----  ----  ----  ----
  Line 3: No. 38  (mid-spine) ---- ----

  Line 1: 1988: (top) 1988: (bottom)
  Line 2:  ----  ----  ----  ----
  Line 3:  1-6  (top)  1-6  (bottom)

Edit line 1 to add colon and 1-6
  Delete 1-6 from line 3

(For 2-line mid-spines on Format 2 titles, see below)

TITLES MARKED BY SERIES

Edit lines 1-3 of the 1st VOLUME/COVER DATE field and lines 1-2 of the 2ND VOLUME/COVER DATE to achieve the following result.

    1ST VOLUME/COVER DATE 2ND VOLUME/COVER DATE
FORMAT=2: Line 1:  SER. 2  (top) SER.2  (bottom)
Line 2: NO. 29  (top) NO. 29  (bottom)
  Line 3: 1988  (mid-spine)  ----

Titles with Complex Mid-Spines

IF MARKED BY DATE OR SERIES (FORMAT 2):
Since Format 2 accomodates only a 1-line mid-spine, you will need to do the following if you have a 2-line mid-spine:

Key the bottom line of the mid-spine in Line 3 of the 1st VOLUME/COVER DATE and manually add the top line of the mid-spine to the binding slip (If you do it the opposite way, there will not be enough space left on the binding slip before the call number).

e.g., If the mid-spine on the above SERIES example were to read JAN-MAR 1988, you would set up the 1ST and 2ND VOLUME/COVER DATE fields exactly the same as above and manually add JAN- JUNE to the binding slip.
IF MARKED BY VOLUME OR NUMBER (FORMAT 5 & 6):
Formats 5 and 6 are designed to accomodate 2-line mid-spines for titles marked by volume and number respectively. See examples

Titles with Pagination Or Abstract Numbers in Mid-Spine

In certain cases it will be desirable to include pagination or abstract numbers in the mid-spine. If this results in a 3-line mid-spine (due to a 2-line date), you will need to manually add the upper line of the mid-spine (similar to procedure above for Format 2 titles).
e.g., Format 5  Line 1:  V. 1:1
    Line 2: 1992
    Line 3: P. 1-200

Exiting the Record

Once you key "Y" (in response to the 2ND VOLUME/COVER DATE field), the binding slip will print on your local printer.

Q <QUIT>
<Make changes permanent?> Y/N
If you make changes permanent:
The checkin boxes will automatically be updated as follows:

If you do not make changes permanent:

The checkin boxes will not be updated (but a binding slip will still be printed). If you will be returning immediately to the checkin record to delete the "To bind" boxes or the entire checkin card, you may wish to choose this option in order to avoid encountering a "busy" (and therefore unavailable) checkin record.

<What serial do you want to send to the bindery?>
Search your next title or hit <return> if you are done with the binding session.
<Are you sure you want to quit?> Y/N
To logoff, hit Q <QUIT> 3 times to return to the INNOPAC main menu screen.
