Several kinds of enclosures, such as phase boxes, designed to protect unusual materials, are available. This section describes each of the binding styles and other available treatments. Information on relative costs are available on request.
The Preservation Department provides various repairs and other treatments, consultation for mold, insects and infestation, assistance in floods, and material salvage in disasters. Please call CTD immediately (2-8843) in cases of infestation or any other emergency that threatens material damage to collections.
Features: hard covers; full buckram covering available in all ten colors shown on binding slip; full spine information.
When to use: large, heavy volumes from two to three inches thick; frequently used volumes that might otherwise qualify for another binding style, such as Mylar or LC-bind (in this case, specify "Buck bind regardless" under special instructions area of binding slip); books with maps or foldouts, and books that receive heavy use and are widely circulated.

Features: original paper covers laminated between transparent Mylar plastic and binding board; original leaf attachment is retained when possible, otherwise textblocks are adhesive bound; call number labels applied by Marking Division.
When to use: paperbacks with intact, untorn covers, without foldouts; ½" to 2" thick. When not to use: do not use if maps or plates need to be bound in, or if book lacks covers, or is taller than 16".
Notes: Most Mylars are returned directly to Branches, or to CAT/MARK for cataloging and/or marking when binding is complete.

Features: hard covers with bare boards; edges flush with the textblock; choice of any ten colors shown on the binding slip; marking should be limited to short binder's title, brief contents info (if necessary) and call number. Spine information is stamped either vertically or horizontally. Please abbreviate and truncate titles and any contents information.
When to use: monographs lacking covers, and for serials with text-blocks up to 2" thick, that will receive light to moderate usage.

Features: stiff blue back cover; transparent plastic front cover; pamphlet is usually stapled or sometimes sewn in place; call number label applied by Marking Division. Pamphlet bind pockets are available for material that must not be attached to the pam bind, or that must be removed to be used. A combination of pam bind and pocket is also possible for materials requiring text to be bound in and loose items in pocket (e.g., music scores are bound into the pamphlet, while music parts are loose in pocket at rear cover, and able to be removed and used).
When to use: pamphlets and small paperbacks up to 3/8" thick. Use the pam bind pocket for items that need to be removed and used separately, such as parts of music scores or maps.
Notes: RUSH is available.
Features: Rigid, acid-free (non-damaging) beige board box. Closes with a button and cord, and is custom-sized to the item. Call number label on spine.
When to use: For items that should not, or cannot, be bound, but must be retained in original format. Books should be thicker than 5/8". Better for non-circulating material.
