Purpose and General Information for the INNOPAC Binding Manual

Introduction

This section of the Berkeley Processing Manual provides information on producing binding slips through INNOPAC. For other general information about binding see BPM III.A. Binding Manual.

The data to support binding is stored, maintained, and edited in the INNOPAC checkin record and card.

Binding slips are generated through the INNOPAC binding module. Units may also use the pull-slip feature in the binding module to determine which issues are ready to be bound. Binding slips and pull slips are printed on the unit's local printer.

When using the INNOPAC binding module, the checkin record and card can be viewed, but not edited. Although some manipulation of data is possible via the binding program, this affects only the binding slip production and does not update the checkin record. Because of this, some pre-binding and/or post-binding editing of the checkin record or card may be necessary.

INNOPAC binding does not automatically update GLADIS V/C or SUM fields. Since GLADIS is the authoritative place for recording the details of bound and "to bind" information, units are responsible for maintaining this information in GLADIS and for seeing that it is appropriately coded or deleted from the INNOPAC record (see BPM Serials Manual section on Holdings).

Pre-Binding

Before using the binding module, certain binding data must already have been input to the INNOPAC checkin record using the UPDATE program. Except where otherwise noted, this data cannot be edited or over-ridden directly through the binding module.  Because of display limitations within the binding module (e.g., BINDTITLE does not display), it is recommended that you view the checkin record in the UPDATE program before going into the binding module.

Bind Slips

Bind slips are printed through use of the INNOPAC Binding Module.  The module can be used for active serial titles only.  If there is not an INNOPAC checkin record for the serial needing binding, then a manual binding slip must be typed instead.  See the general Binding Manual for instructions on this.

Pull Slips

Pull slips are printed lists of items which the INNOPAC system considers due for binding based on the UNIT OF BINDING and the BINDING DELAY fields in the card parameters. Units may use this feature to assist them in selecting and pulling material for binding.

For each bindable group of issues, a separate pull-slip is printed. Pull-slips are printed on the unit's local
printer using standard form-feed/laser printer paper. Data on the checkin record and card can be viewed, but cannot be edited, via the pull-slip program.
