BTECH minutes - 5/2/02

BERKELEY TECHNICAL SERVICES DISCUSSION GROUP
MEETING MINUTES

Wednesday, May 1, 2002

Recorder: Lisa Sanchez
9:00am to 11:00am
303 Doe Library

Announcements:

Please note there will be a B-Tech meeting in June, but no meeting will be
held in July. An unopened package of duplicate dumb barcodes recently
surfaced in the Bioscience Library. In 1998, a range of dumb barcodes
that overlapped a range of previously printed piggyback barcodes
was discovered. It was thought that at that time, we had discarded all
the duplicate barcodes. If you come across any barcodes that appear to
duplicate those already in Gladis, please send them to Charis Takaro in
the Systems Office.

Agenda:

STX/STO/SUM project Update / Ginny Moon, Charis Takaro, Jane Kelley
The work on the NRLF cleanup project that resulted from the

STX/STO/SUM update is progressing quite well. This work has already made
NRLF material more accessible. New storage notes (STX) have been added to
65,465 records. NRLF is currently correcting these errors from
those problem logs. The STO fix deleted 2,543 empty storage
notes from Gladis and those records were recorded for review. Many of the
problems were as a result of unlinked analytic records. NRLF will do that
work and notify the owning library when a book is not at NRLF. As
part of the SUM updates, 15,000 records for material at NRLF
were logged for review and correction. NRLF will do the cleanup on these
records and refer problems to the owning library, when necessary. Serials
Cataloging Department is working on cleaning up the residual serial record
problems and are pecking away at the Innopac Some copies notes
that loaded as a result of this project. On the whole, the project was
very successful in cleaning up the database. NRLF will be able to solve
most of the problems, with some records with problems being forwarded to
the corresponding library for stacks checking and cleanup.

Special Library Supply items / Judith Weeks

Judith handed out a list of special Library supply items that
are available from Mainly Stationary in 242 Moffitt. It is a short list,
which includes large red rubber bands, 3M Tattle Tape, binding string,
call number labels and label shields, Innopac checkin pocket
labels and Undu adhesive remover. The items on the Mainly Stationary list
are not available through Office Depot and are Library
Specialty items. If you are in need of any of these items contact John
Trujillo in Mainly Stationary at 642-3636 or at
johntj@uclink4.berkeley.edu. Please call in advance before heading over
to pick up the items.

Also, if you require Manual or Innopac binding slips, please
call Tom Perry-Houts in the Bindery Preparation Division (BPD) at 642-8140
and he can send them out to you.

Cabinet statement on Training / Judith Weeks

The Librarys Draft Policy for Training and development that was
proposed and initially developed in January of this year, has been reduced
to a single statement on training. It reads as follows:

The Library is committed to the growth of our staff so that
they can acquire, organize, and interpret information for our patrons. We
encourage all employees to make maximum use of training and development
programs that enhance job-related skills, opportunities for advancement,
and campus committee service. Supervisors are expected to provide
support for employee training to the fullest extent possible without
compromising other essential work of The Library. Library management
places a high priority on providing the resources that allow this training
to go on smoothly at all levels of our organization.

The Library Cabinet decided that a detailed implementation plan
for training is not possible at this time.

Open discussion

Snapshots for Melvyl-T are now being captured 50,000 records at
a time and being sent to CD for loading. It will take a while for all
records to be captured and forwarded for loading since there are about 5
million records that need to be loaded.

The Classification committee has been charged with rewriting
the supplemental Classification Standards for the LA series. The
classifications now in use are outdated and about 20 years old.
The committee has only 1 month to complete the rewrite and the
outcome affects us all.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:10 am
