INNOPAC backup
Steve LaFollette of the Technical Services Department, Serials/Documents
Division has volunteered for this assignment. The daily backup, which
usually takes 10 minutes will be done at 5:00 p.m. The weekly backup,
which usually takes about an hour or more depending on how many users are
on the system, will also be done at 5:00 p.m.
This Friday, January 12th, Steve will be doing the backup at 4:30 p.m.
Because this is his first time doing a full back-up, Steve can ask
questions from the appropriate staff if the need arises.

If this schedule should change for any unforeseen reason, Steve will send
an e-mail message to alert INNOPAC users.

Computers at Work
There are still spaces available for the two workshops being offered on:

Wednesday, 10:30-12:00 January 17 -- 3 spaces available
Wednesday, 1:30-3 January 24 -- 6 spaces available
Contact Pam Daniels to reserve your space.

Future meetings and training sessions
Next month the group will be discussing CARS and Electronic Media. CARS
will affect not only circulation and billing functions, but also technical
service functions. Lorelie Mansur will come to lead discussions and talk
about plans for training. The Circuit Riders will also be involved in the
discussions and training.

It is extremely important to have a representative from your unit to
attend the next meeting scheduled for February 7th, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Lorelie plans to offer training sessions in Room 105 in March, when CARS
is expected to be implemented. To prepare for the discussion, Lorelie
suggests that staff review last month's e-mail messages to all-users. The
following will be the most vital to review:

DATE: December 12, 1995
SUBJECT: New feature available in Autocirc Maintenance

DATE: December 16, 1995
SUBJECT: CARS and withdrawal/replacements of billed items

DATE: December 19, 1995
SUBJECT: Getting ready for CARS, part 1: Authorization requests
NOTE: If you didn't save these messages, contact Pam Daniels via e-mail to
get copies.

Agenda
Tracers - Jane Kelley
Jane, who is the Serial Expeditor in the Serials/Documents Division
presented a detailed overview on tracers. She encouraged staff to send
via:

1. e-mail messages to the traceser@library
2. the TRACER request form

Response to requests will occur within 3 - 5 days. Requests regarding new
title cataloging, title changes, cataloged titles returned for correction,
and cataloged titles never received should be sent with complete
information describing the title(s). All requests with a detailed
description of items to be traced will ensure a fast turn around time.
INNOPAC, GLADIS, or OCLC records are always welcomed.

In some cases when a single issue serial ordered on monographic funds is
being traced, it may be hard to determine which Expeditor is more
appropriate to contact. If a tracer is misrouted, Jane and Alice
Strickland, the Monographic Expeditor will forward the request to the
appropriate expeditor. Tracer requests over the phone are discouraged,
but calling to find out how to proceed with a tracer is acceptable. Jane
can be reached at extension 2-5487.

Questions were asked about the backlog in Serials Cataloging. Although
there are a significant number of new titles, title changes, and
microfiche, the backlog is better than it was in years past. Documents
are the most problematic and make up most of the backlog. Although stated
in the Branch Processing Manual procedure that an item is considered lost
after 1 year, Jane will keep reviewing her requests and searching for
missing items.

Questions were also asked regarding staff assignment and language
expertise. It was suggested that a list be available for staff and
mounted on the FAQs page on the WEB. See this list at:

http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/AboutLibrary/Staff/BTECH/btechfaq.html

The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
