BTECH minutes - 3/29/95

BERKELEY TECHNICAL SERVICES DISCUSSION GROUP
MEETING MINUTES
March 29, 1995

Recorder: Pam Daniels
Guest: Bernie Hurley

Announcements

Karen Murphey and Pam Daniels met with David Farrell to speak for the
group's to re-establish the Branch Technical Processing Operations
Coordinator position. David agreed to pass our recommendations to Sue
Rosenblatt and suggested that we pass along the job card to Ralph Moon,
chair of the Access Services Task Group.

Training sessions on pre- and post-cataloging were conducted on March 22,
1995. The entire workflow for new titles and title changes were explained
with the help of Judith Walker, Linda Turitz and Esther Fulsaas from the
Technical Services Department, Serials/Documents Division, and Pam Daniels
from the Serials Check-in Divison. Both sessions were filled to capacity
limit. Those who attended thought the sessions went well. There will be
more training sessions in the future.

A reminder to the group: The group was designed to meet the following
needs of the Technical Services staff:

- to address any procedures that are ambiguous or hard to understand
- to improve job skills
- to serve as a resource for questions and concerns from staff performing
branch technical processing work

As co-conveners, Karen Murphey and Pam Daniels can not hold discussions
relating to potential layoffs or job reassignment. Staff concerns should
be directed to individual department heads, the Staff Ombudsman Office,
union representatives, Library Human Resources Department or Peter Lyman.
Bernie Hurley, Head of Systems, told the group that reports from the
individual Task Forces would be completed by Friday. With a $1.2 million
budget cut, there will most likely be staff re-assignments.

Agenda

Bernie Hurley responded to staff needs and concerns regarding the
following issues:

availability of ports and slow response time for INNOPAC and GLADIS
dealing with a finite number of INNOPAC order records
possibility of having sections of the BPM on the WEB
keying glitches and "screen freeze" in TTE

Rebecca Vesterfelt asked about having a llibrary liaison with the Campus
Occupational Health Services to talk to staff about office and VDT safety.
The group expressed concerns about work related injuries and air quality.
As part of the decentralization training, handouts relating to these
issues are provided to staff. Anyone interested in having copies can
contact Pam Daniels.

The Berkeley Technical Services Discussion Group Roster has grown from 39
to 52 staff persons. The first list that David Farrell issued need to be
updated. Eventually, the roster will be available on-line. Watch for
future e-mail messages regarding the updated version of the roster.

The group decided to keep meeting minutes, outling the main points
discussed. The position of the meeting recorder will be selected at each
meeting. The frequency of the meetings will be dependent upon the number
of agenda items sent to the co-conveners.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
