BTECH minutes - 2/9/95
BERKELEY TECHNICAL SERVICES DISCUSSION GROUP
MEETING MINUTES
February 9, 1995
Recorder: Karen Murphey
These are the main points covered in the meeting.
There needs to be uniformity of procedures for all units. This is
difficult due to a lack of adequate standardized training.
Training is needed when LAs are given new responsibilites. This has not
been consistent when there is a reorganization of the job rather than a
new position being posted. The latter requiring a training plan.
Current possible interests for training that several members of the group
expressed are: basics of reading MARC codes/Authority records. There was
also discussion of the Branch processing Shelves (BRPR) for charging
issues held in technical processing units. Questions were answered
regarding the public catalog display and the GLADIS maintenance display.
The current BPM and other manuals are difficult to read due to confusing
table of contents. The revision of Appendix 3 should help the situation.
Suggestions were made to put a portion of the BPM online to improve
searching capabilities.
The group felt the need for one central person to contact with problems in
Technical Services. The position, such as the one previously held by
Linda Foy, needs to be re-established. This person needs to be adept at a
variety of technical services procedures; both with serials and
monographs.
The group also saw the need to compile a list of contact persons in
various units, such as Serials Cataloging, describing their duties. Such
a list would make it easier to contact the proper person if the need
arises.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 a.m.
