Cataloging Table of Contents REQUEST TO CATALOG MAPS                                                                                 Revised: August 1997

PURPOSE
Maps, aerial photographs, satellite images, and globes may be sent to the Map Room for cataloging.  Units should key into GLADIS a q-level, in-process record for the item.  Catalog records will be displayed in GLADIS and MELVYL.  (The selector may indicate a branch or unit other than his/her own as a location, e.g., MAPS, if desired.)

POLICY
Standard practice is to classify maps according to the Library of Congress "G" schedule, which arranges these materials by geograhic areas.  All items are searched in OCLC, and if copy is found, the item receives full cataloging.  If copy is not found, and the item falls into one of the following categories, it will receive full original cataloging.

  1. Shared purchases (SHAR-S or SHAR-M funds)
  2. Master negative microforms
  3. Purchases in an area for which Berkeley has assumed shared collection development responsibility
  4. Items for which a selector or branch library has requested full cataloging.
All other titles receive brief cataloging created on GLADIS.

BRIEF CATALOGING
Records include all necessary fields to meet GLADIS and MELVYL standards, including author, title, edition, scale, imprint, collation, series, photoreproduction notes, and subject heading(s).  Brief records are created in order to save time and money.

PROCEDURE
Key an in-process record in GLADIS and send the material to be cataloged to the Map Room.  (See BPM procedures for keying in-process records).  If the treatment desired differs from standard practice, so indicate, e.g., RUSH, special call number or classification.
