Selectors requesting cataloging for electronic resources on the World Wide Web should notify the "sermaint" reflector for serials or the "monmaint" reflector for monographs.
The requests should always include the title and URL of the resource. The loc "WEB" will be assigned to all internet resources. Selectors may request a holding note be added as well referring patrons to the appropriate reference staff when they experience difficulty using the site. Any other information about the resource the selector feels is important such as scope of coverage, differences between the web resource and its paper equivalent, etc. may also be included in the email request.
Catalogers will add an 856 field (Electronic location and access), a 530 field (Additional physical form available note) as appropriate, and the loc "WEB" to the GLADIS record for the paper copy if it already exists in the GLADIS database. In this case, a GLADIS loc will already be assigned to the paper copy and a call number for the paper will appear in the GLADIS call number index.
When no paper copy exists in GLADIS, catalogers will add the loc "WEB" to a record for the web based resource and the designation "No call number". Because of problems with records merging correctly in MELVYL, catalogers will search the bibliographic utilities for a record for a paper equivalent if it exists adding the 856 field, 530 field, and loc "WEB" as above.
In some cases, selectors may wish to add information about a paper copy to an existing record for a web based resource in GLADIS. This may occur when an uncataloged paper resource is processed after the record for a digitized version has been added to GLADIS. A call number and the appropriate loc will be added to the record.
Note: The GLADIS locs ABS, MAGS and COMP have also been used in a UC project to catalog full text files available on MELVYL.
Selectors and other staff who note changes in URLs, scope of coverage, titles changes, etc. should report them to the "sermaint" reflector for serials and the "monmaint" reflector for monographs.
