1. Council Reports
Administrative Services Coucil: The council met on Tuesday May 13, 2008: There will be a new Staff and Academic Reduction in Time (START) Program offered to staff at UCB. Vice Chancellor Brostrom will be sending out the details and soliciting comments about the proposal. If approved, START, which is scheduled to take affect on July 1st, 2008, should help the university cope with the anticipated budget short fall.
Another issue discussed in the meeting was the copy services contract. Our current contract with Canon will expire at the end of 2010. And, it seems to loosing money as demand to printing and copying is steadily declining in favor downloading and email research results. The Council will be forming a group to look into developing new models to accommodate changing needs of our users.
Collections Council: While the budget news for fiscal year 2008/09 is not good, Collection’s council is not talking and planning for budget cuts yet. However, the temporary permanent funding augmentations that were allocated in 2007/08 fiscal year will not be renewed next year.
Cabinet: The new Acquisition librarian’s job posting is still in progress. The job description and salary range is being redrawn to attract a better pool of applicants than the last time the job was posted.
2. ILS Needs
Discussion of the new ILS system produced the following list of desired features to be available to help patrons use the library with ease; and help staff and selectors better manage the collection:
• Ability to browse by uniform titles, indexed by alphabetically by author/title
• Browsable shelflist
• Ability to process ILL & Stanford requests
• Ability to process NRLF requests
• Patron initiated holds, recalls, and searches
• “Desktop” collection management tools for selectors: producing non-circulating items within call number ranges, statistics for collection evaluation, without special programming by Systems
• Current periodicals holdings up to date (to avoid checking Innopac for current issues) along with the accurate location display
• Item availability and status displayed in the default display
• Search levels needed: basic, advanced, expert
• Flagging records for maintenance through the system
• The ability to produce monetary value of the collection by call number ranges for the purpose of preparing budget requests
Also; Arts and Humanities Council members strongly recommend keeping Gladis for a period of 6-12 months after the new system is operational.
