AGENDA
1. Ramifications of LC intention to stop work on series entries
L. Leighton reviewed the recent Library of Congress’ decision to cease creating series authority records as part of their cataloging practice. The LC decision can be found at:
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/calhoun-report-final.pdf. The implementation of the decision was postponed from May 31st to June 30th.
It is anticipated that with the expected savings LC will be able to increase its production of original cataloging. Because The Library (UCB) catalogs approximately 100,000 titles a year (80,000-90,000 through copy cataloging), it will be impossible to add controlled series headings to the records that will no longer have them. The Library has decided that MVMs already cataloged and classified together will be continued until those sets are complete. Treatment of new MVMs will be left up to the catalogers' judgment. It will probably be impossible to continue currently kept-together analyzed sets that other libraries will be classifying separately. Technical Services will monitor OCLC records through the summer to determine if most of the available copy for those sets are classified separately according to the LC decision. A decision on whether to continue analyzed sets will be made in early October. Selectors will be able to request exceptions for individual MVMs and analyzed sets. No attempts will be made to add controlled text or edit information to the 4xx field for records copied from OCLC. Data added to the 4xx field will reflect information on the publication cataloged and not consist of a constructed heading.
2. Shared print prospective archives for e-journals
The Council reviewed and commented on CDC’s position paper on prospective shared print archives for licensed journal content. These was a general consensus that the technical context in which the decision is being made is not yet mature enough. More than trust we need certainty that the digital repository we are to depend on, developed by UC or someone else, is reliable and unfailing. It is not clear at all this is the present case.
3. Graduate Division and GSI Teaching and Resource Center--Update.
S. McDaniel gave a summary of her responsibilities as The Library's liaison to the Graduate Division. She regularly submits articles to the monthly eGrad Electronic Newsletter, http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/ publications/. She welcomes submission from colleagues across the Library. The goal is to keep graduate students informed of new resources and services available to them. She also participates in new graduate student orientation at the beginning of the Fall semester. She offers a one hour session and coordinates an information table with the participation of librarians across campus. During the Fall semester she will be setting up three subject oriented workshops for graduate students. These will focus on subject oriented resources. She also works with the GSI Teaching and Resource Center, http://gsi.berkeley.edu/, to develop workshops and materials for graduate student instructors. She was particularly interested in bringing to the attention of council members the relatively new policy concerning the development and implementation of a 300 level class designed to introduce GSIs to teaching techniques and practices, http://gsi.berkeley.edu/faculty/mentoring.html. These are being offered by many departments across campus. She has participated in some of these already and is willing to share with others the information she has prepared.
4. Announcements
D. Sullivan is considering a meeting with Chuck Eckman the new AUL for Collections. A suggestion was made to have a joint meeting with the Social Science Council. He requested we submit agenda items for the meeting.
5. Short Council Reports
Administrative Services Council met May 9. M. Rancer reported that he was talking with Canon about the possibility of Canon running the over-the-counter copy service in Moffitt after Charles Jackson's retirement. He also noted that he was aware of the problems with the microform reader/printers, and noted that several new ones are being ordered. S. Wong reported that there will now be a once a year call for staff evaluations, and that they will be due this year on August 1.
The meeting adjourned at 11:20 a.m.
