Arts and Humanities Council, Minutes of Meeting 7 March 2002
Present: M. Burnette, E. Byrne (recorder), J. Ceballos, M. Cochran, C.
Delgado, M. Erviti, P. Iannuzzi, S. Khanaka, S. Mendoza, A. Mitchell, C.
Smith, D. Sullivan, A. Urbanic, K. Wayne (chair). Guest: P. Maughan
1. 2001/02 Townsend Center Fellow Report and Discussion: Patricia Maughan
of the Teaching Library described her experience as a Townsend Center for
the Humanities Fellow. The 24 Fellows, including junior and senior
faculty, one librarian fellow, post-doctorates, and graduate students
working on dissertations, meet weekly to share and discuss each other's
research. Pat's topic, "Harmonic Convergence? The Confluence of
Humanities Teaching, Research, Student Learning Outcomes and Information
Literacy in Higher Education," makes use of her research since 1994 on UCB
undergraduate students' library research skills. She has found her
experience as a Townsend Fellow valuable and challenging, and encouraged us
to apply.
ACTION ITEM: Pat agreed to send a copy of her paper via e-mail to the
Arts and Humanities Council reflector.
2. Announcements:
* The Environmental Design Library will probably move back to Wurster Hall
in late June or early July, earlier than its originally-scheduled August date.
* When ENVI vacates the 5th floor of Moffitt work can begin on rebuilding
the Moffitt collection and moving Moffitt materials from Gardner Stacks
back to the 4th and 5th floors of Moffitt.
3. Function Council News: Allan Urbanic gave an update of Collections
Council activities, and provided background information about the 2/19/02
Collections Budget Subcommittee recommendations for adjusting selector
monograph fund allocations. Collections Council is working on developing a
3-year budget planning cycle using projections for inflation and revenue.
Allan briefly explained the 3 models for adjusting funds to raise $50,000
needed to assist with some important concerns: how to make the currently
static digital library funds "sustainable, " i.e., able to permanently pay
on-going digital subscription costs; how to support special or "big-ticket"
collections needs; and how to support collections-related work in Technical
Services. It was also explained that too much carry-over of collection
funds indicates to Campus Administration that we are not spending our
money, and makes it difficult for Library Administration to request
additional funds. It was suggested that basic communication about
collections topics should be more widespread. All-selector early birds
would be a good way for the AUL for Collections to inform selectors about
various issues relating to collections.
4. Preparation for April meeting.
The next meeting will be April 4, 10-12. Guest speaker will be Laine
Farley of CDL. In a previous e-mail K. Wayne solicited questions and items
for Laine to cover. Members are encouraged to send additional discussion
topics and questions to Kathryn before the next meeting.
