2. Announcements

Kathryn Wayne announced that AH & C Council has received funding from the

the upcoming academic year, 2001-2002. Discussion will take place at the
next meeting regarding possible programs.

Art & Humanities Council bade farewell to outgoing chair John Roberts and
thanked him for his leadership during the past two years.

3. Selection of new representatives to the function councils.

Sue Koskinen
(Steve Mendoza continuing)

Collections Coucil:
Jan Carter
(Allan Urbanic continuing)

Public Services Council:
Carlos Delgado
(Mari Miller continuing)

Technical Services Council:
Claudette Smith
(John Ceballos continuing)

4. Updates from function council representatives

Administrative Services Council (Steve Mendoza). Meeting cancelled.

Collections Council (Michaelyn Burnette) -- Michaelyn reported that due to
a failing economy, approximately $600,000 (state money) of the proposed
3-year $3,000,000 library budget will likely be withdrawn.

Public Services Council (Mari Miller - reporting "virtually") -- PSC is
discussing a draft document from the Circulation Services Group to create a
consistent library-wide policy regarding the use of reference cards in the
library. Reference cards issued from Doe Circulation department allow patrons
to photocopy materials offsite, but Subject Specialty libraries do not
typically check out any materials to reference card holders. This sends an
ambiguous message to patrons and can lead to public service dilemmas. The
document is still in beginning draft and beginning discussion stages. Mari will
inquire if this draft can be forwarded to AHC, or if it would be better to
wait until it is a little more formulated.

Technical Services Council (John Ceballos). Meeting cancelled.

5. Schedule of future meetings

AH & C currently meets the first Thursday of the month, as well as the
third Thursday [if needed] from 10-12. Kathryn Wayne would like to
determine if an alternate day of the week would better accommodate the
majority of the members. Kathryn is requesting that if Thursday, 10-12,
presents a conflict to contact her directly. It was agreed that the next
meeting would be held August 2.

6. Overview and tour of the Environmental Design Archives.

Waverly Lowell, curator, along with recently appointed archivist/project
manager Ardys Kozbial, presented an interesting and lively description and
tour of the Environmental Design Archives. Its collections represent the
majority of historically significant architects and landscape architects of
the of the San Francisco Bay Region, including John Galen Howard, Bernard
Maybeck, Julia Morgan, Ernest Coxhead, and Charles and Henry Greene. The
Environmental Design Archives provides primary source material for
scholarly research, teaching support, preservation, and public service.

Originally founded by William W. Wurster in 1955 as the Architectural
Archives, it was renamed the Documents Collection in 1973 due to expanded
holdings in landscape architecture. Ultimately, in 1999, with the
establishment of a formal archival program, it is presently known as the
Environmental Design Archives.

The Environmental Design Archives holds nearly one hundred collections
documenting the built and landscaped environment, spanning 1890-1990. These
contain primary source materials such as correspondence, reports,
specifications, drawings, photographs, and artifacts. Though the archive's
primary focus is the San Francisco Bay Area, it also includes designers and
projects from throughout California, the United States, and the world.

Since Waverly's arrival in 1998, she has reconstituted collections and
instituted systems of access and preservation by housing the records in
archival folders and boxes, creating finding aids, producing a standards
series for architectural records collections (sold worldwide), and
establishing a website complete with fully processed records. Ardys Kozbial
is focusing the majority of her time managing the Greene & Greene Virtual
Archives Project, a collaborative multi-institutional endeavor.

Due to the retrofitting of Wurster Hall, the Environmental Design Archives
is temporarily located at 2223 Fulton Street, Room 110. For complete
information and details of the Environmental Design Archives, please visit
their website: <http://www.ced.berkeley.edu/cedarchives/>. Access to the
archives is by appointment only (PH: 510.642.5124; E-mail:
