Art and Humanities Council Minutes
October 7, 1999

Present: John Roberts (Chair), Mari Miller, Allan Urbanic, Michaelyn
Burnette, Anthony Bliss, Phyllis Bischof, Hamid Mahamedi, Gary Handman,
Jan Carter, Nensi Brailo, Kristine Comito, Jeanette Garay, Matthew Weber,

1. Reports from the Function Council representatives. The
representatives of the function councils supplied brief reports:
Collections, Public Services, Technical Services and Administrative
Services. (Minutes of those respective meetings are available elsewhere.)
Members of the group were encouraged to bring issues forward to the
functions councils via our representatives.

2. Appointment of a replacement for Judy Tsou on the Technical Services
Council. Hamid Mahamedi volunteered at the end of the meeting.

3. Role of Arts & Humanities Council: The remainder of the meeting was
devoted to brainstorming about what roles A&HC might play in the future.
The topics listed below (arranged under improvised headings by J. Roberts)
will be reviewed, refined and prioritized at our next meeting, October
21st.

FUNCTION COUNCILS
*Receive regular reports from our representatives to the four function
councils
*Make recommendations to the function councils about pending issues and
suggest issues for their consideration
*Function council representatives can communicate directly with council
members via e-mail

STRENGTHEN COMMUNICATION WITH OTHER LIBRARY UNITS
*Invite Library Development to make a presentation and collaborate with
them in seeking new funds
*Consult with the Teaching Library on coverage of the arts & humanities
*Meet with representatives from Conservation, Systems, Technical Services
*Meet with Bancroft staff to improve coordination and communication; W.
Roberts
and D. Farrell could speak on faculty papers

STRENGTHEN EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION
*Invite the Dean of Humanities to meet with the Council
*Interact with CDL, expressing arts & humanities concerns of UCB
*Foster dialogue between the Library and campus departments, e.g. by hosting
a meeting with the chairs of departmental library committees
*Build bridges to relevant affiliated libraries (who may be represented on
the Council), University Art Museum, Townsend Center, GTU.
*Network with other arts & humanities libraries in the area

SERVE AS FORUM FOR A&H COLLECTIONS ISSUES
*Assist AUL and Director, Collections in coordinating collecting in the
arts & humanities
*Discuss broad humanities collections policy issues
*Explore retrospective and interdisciplinary needs
*Identify collection areas that are underfunded or inadequately covered by
current selector assignments

PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING AMONG A&H UNITS
*Presentations by individual selectors about collecting practices and
policies in specific areas
*Visits to separate units, e.g. Art History/Classics, Graduate Services,
Environmental Design Library
*Announcements of important developments in individual areas, as part of
an A&HC meeting or via e-mail.
*Regular reports from units?

OTHER
*Write a Council Charge or Mission Statement
*Examine the basis for allocation of resources for the arts & humanities
*Design/advocate projects or initiatives of broad interest, e.g., an
E-text center
*Create or cooperate in the development of tutorials for widely-used tools,
e.g. Arts & Humanities Citation Index
*Assist in developing the training plans for the new AULs
*Topical discussions, e.g., communication with faculty
*Sponsor continuing education/current awareness programs, perhaps jointly
with other campus units

4. Next meetings: it was decided to meet again on the third Thursday of
this month, October 21, and to delay the November meeting to the second
Thursday, November 11. The recorder for October 21 will be Elizabeth
Byrne.
