Tom Leonard made his annual visit to the council and discussed the following issues:
T. Leonard circulated a copy the Library’s position paper regarding space and library collections, which is currently being reviewed by the Cabinet and Collections Council. This paper is in response to a misconception that collections need for space is diminishing due to digitization.
He also reported that Library’s budget should receive a modest increase in 07/08. However, the outlook for later years is uncertain.
Salary information of employees of all U.C. Campuses is now available at the Doe Reference Desk to be viewed by the public.
Academic Senate’s Library Committee is discussing issues of fairness across disciplines, and encouraging open access and how it is affected by copyright restrictions.
Fred Yasaki updated the group on various ongoing construction projects:
Public Health: Schematic design phase is finished. Architect Kavah Massih has been hired to design the surge move into the basement of University Hall. Security is being enhanced in U. Hall for this purpose. The Public Health library move is to be completed in the summer of 2007.
Warren Hall is being torn down at present. Fundraising for the project is still in progress. Projected timeline for this project is 10 years.
The Physics-Astronomy Library is scheduled to move back to Le Conte in the summer of 2007.
The New East Asian Library is will open, also, in the summer of 2007. And the project is on time.
The Bancroft Library (Doe-Annex) renovation project is also on time and scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2008. Security of the building is being enhanced and humidity control upgraded.
Café Terrace art display has been installed. This display uses audio-visual technology to highlight community activism in Richmond.
P. Payne reported that both Moffitt Information Gateway and EAL computers are slated for upgrades; and, Systems Office has hired three new technicians; Joe Towers, who retired recently, will be recalled in December 2006 on a part time basis.
Mike Rancer reported that the newly established Safety and Security Committee is due to hold its first meeting on December 1st 2006. This committee deals with library system wide issues, not just Doe-Moffitt complex.
M. Rancer also reported that the digital scanning demonstration project has been successful. 12 scanning kits have been ordered, which work on the microfilm readers in the Newspaper room and some of the subject specialty libraries. To accommodate these new kits, the Minolta 6000 models will be upgraded.
Next meeting is scheduled for January 9th 2007.
