CHINESE AMERICAN IMAGES

CHINATOWN STORIES (1940 - 1980)
Photography by Kem Lee

Kem Lee immigrated to the United States in 1927. As a photographer, Lee took portraits of hundreds of Chinatown residents from bachelors to newlyweds to large families. As a photojournalist, Lee provided nearly all of the photographs for the local Chinese newspapers. These photos depict people and events at different historical periods and illustrate how one ethnic community has changed over time. The Kem Lee Collection contains hundreds of images and negatives. The Kem Lee Photo Collection is unprocessed.
