The list below contains online indexes in the UC Berkeley Library that are most relevant to social work research.  Other library system indexes may apply, depending on your research topic. Be sure to consult the complete list of online indexes and abstracts.

Most of the indexes below are available only to users affiliated with the university. UC Only denotes indexes available to users affiliated with any UC campus. UCB Only denotes indexes available only to users affiliated with UC Berkeley. If you are not connected to the web via the campus computing system -- for instance, if you have a private internet service provider -- you must use the library proxy service to have access to these indexes. Indexes without an affiliation note are available to all users without restriction.

ABI/Inform Global  - UC Only
Coverage: 1971-
The ABI/Inform Global database (ABI) contains citations to articles in over 1,000 journals in business, management, finance, and economics. All citations include abstracts, and full text is available for 600 journals. Check this index for material on administration, management, supervision, and volunteerism and nonprofits agencies.  Also check other indexes on the Business Library page.

African American Theses and Dissertations 
This bibliography lists over 400 theses and dissertations on African American topics completed at the University of California, Berkeley from 1907 to 1997.

Alternative Press Index Online - UCB Only
Coverage: 1991-
The Alternative Press Index (API), a leading guide to the alternative press in North America, draws citations from some 380 alternative, radical, and left publications which report and analyze issues of cultural, economic, political, and social change. Amongst periodicals included are Cineaste, Environmental Action, Socialist Review, and Women's Review of Books; 90% of publications included herein are not indexed elsewhere. API indexes editorials, regular columns, essays, fiction; speeches, interviews, statistics, reprints; bibliographies, biographies, obituaries, memoirs; and reviews. 

AltPress Watch - UCB Only
Coverage: 1995-
AltPress Watch is a full text resource that covers newspapers, magazines, and
journals of the alternative and independent press. Topics are far ranging including
politics and government, policy and culture, international issues, education,
environment as well as reviews of theater, movies and books. Coverage begins as far back as 1995. East Bay Express is included with coverage starting 6/01.

America: History and Life  - UC Only
America: History and Life is bibliographic database containing citations to articles on the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. The database comprises almost 400,000 bibliographic entries and covers over 2,000 journals published worldwide. In addition to covering all key English-language historical journals, America: History and Life coverage includes selected historical journals from major countries, state and local history journals, and a targeted selection of hundreds of journals in the social sciences and humanities.

America's Newspapers - UCB Only
Complete full-text content of local and regional news from over 300 US newspapers. Includes regional California titles, such as Contra Costa Times, Sacramento Bee, Santa Rosa Press Democrat, San Jose Mercury News and more.

ArticleFirst [via FirstSearch/OCLC] - UC Only
Coverage: 1990-
The ArticleFirst database provides citations from the table of contents pages of over 11,000 journals in the areas of engineering, technology, general interest, social sciences, business, the humanities, and popular culture.

Black Studies Database - UC Only
Coverage: 1948-1986
Black Studies Database (BSD) includes more than 170,000 citations drawn 
from more than 150 significant and influential journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, pamphlets and reports relevant to the Black experience and the African Diaspora. This valuable resource, created by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, covers events critical to the study of Black life and culture outside of Africa including notable figures in Black history, culture, and sports; the Civil Rights Movement, the growth of the NAACP and the National Urban League; the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; jazz and soul music; and much more.

California History
Coverage: 1922-
The California Historical Society makes available via its web site an online index to California History.

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications [CGP]
Coverage: 1994-
Use the CGP database to retrieve records for government documents cataloged by the U.S. Government Printing Office. Items cataloged include hearings of
Congressional committees, congressional debates and records, judiciary 
material, documents issued by executive departments such as Defense, State, 
and Labor, and documents issued by the Office of the President. 

CatchWord - UC Only
CatchWord provides full text access to domestic and international scholarly and
academic publications, in a wide range of subject areas. Full text articles are available only for journals for which U.C. Berkeley has paper subscriptions.

Chicano Database - UC Only
Use the Chicano Database (@RLG) to retrieve records for all types of materials in the areas of Mexican-American topics, and since 1992, materials on other Latino cultures, e.g., Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Central American immigrants. Subject coverage includes art, language, sociology, public policy, economics, history, literature, politics, and law. The database is produced by the Chicano Studies Library, University of California.

Chicano/LatinoNet (CLNET)
The Chicano/LatinoNet database (CLNET) contains information on Chicano/Latino-related courses being taught at various institutions; library catalogs; research guides, bibliographies, brochures, and archival inventories; information on conferences, scholarships, funding agencies, and jobs; research information and resources; statistics.

Cochrane Library - UCB Only
Indexes journal articles, reviews, and bibliographies which provide evidence-based effects of health care, as well as a register of published economic evaluations of health care interventions and information on healthcare technology assessment from seven databases such as The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, and the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness.

Congressional Indexes, 1789-1972 - UC Only
The Congressional Indexes 1789-1972 provide citations to the following: 
a) U.S. Serial Set: {House and Senate legislative and investigative reports and documents; Annual reports and statistical publications from Federal agencies; Journals of the House of Representatives and Senate; Administrative reports of both chambers of Congress}. b)Senate Executive Documents and Reports. c)U.S. Congressional Committee Hearings. d)Unpublished Hearings from the Committees of the House and Senate (1823-1972). e)U.S. Congressional Committee Prints.

Congressional Information via Lexis-Nexis  - UC Only
The Lexis-Nexis Congressional database contains bill tracking services back to
1989, indexing and abstracts of congressional publications back to 1789, a "hot
 topics" section, and full text of many congressional committee reports and testimony (1994- ), regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations and Federal Register, the Congressional Record and the National Journal.

Contemporary Women's Issues - UCB Only
Coverage: 1992-
Contemporary Women's Issues provides full text access to journals, hard-to-find
 newsletters, reports, pamphlets, fact sheets, and guides regarding a broad array of gender-related issues (e.g., violence, economic development, health, the military, education, human rights, law). This database covers sources published by organizations around the world. 

CQ Researcher - UCB Only
Coverage: 1991-
The CQ Researcher is the perfect answer for people who need a place to begin
research on current topics. This weekly publication covers the most current and
controversial issues of the day with complete summaries, insight into all sides of the issues, bibliographies and more. Users may browse through articles in the current issue or search for past articles using words, dates or other criteria. 

CQ Supreme Court Collection - UCB Only
Combines historical analysis with updates and commentary of US Supreme Court decisions, biographies of Supreme Court justices, Supreme Court institutional history and the US Constitution. Also includes background and commentary on constitutions from over 100 countries.

CQ Weekly - UCB Only
Coverage: 1983-
The CQ Weekly is known as the pre-eminent resource for Congress-watchers who need nonpartisan information on Capitol Hill. The CQ Weekly on the Web includes access to the full text of all articles published since 1983. A user may browse through articles in the current issue or search for past articles by words, dates, subjects or other criteria. The Web service also provides users with access to some CQ Weekly articles prior to when they appear in print.

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses - UCB Only
Indexes graduate dissertations from over 1,000 North American, and selected European, graduate schools and universities. Dissertations published since 1980, and master's theses since 1988, include brief abstracts written by the authors. UC dissertations since 1996 are free for downloading. Other titles can be borrowed through interlibrary loan or purchased online in a variety of formats. Note: This index does not include masters' theses or group papers submitted in the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare. For directions on how to find those items, see

Coverage: 1966-
ERIC contains citations with abstracts from journals, conference proceedings, curricula, and research reports in the fields of education and related social sciences. Corresponds to two printed journals: Resources in Education (RIE) and Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). Coverage includes 1966 to the present.

Ethnic NewsWatch - UC Only
The Ethnic NewsWatch database contains news, culture and history from 200 publications of the ethnic, minority and native press. Nearly 500,000 full text articles dating back to 1990 are available, along with archival material dating back to the mid 1980's. More than 7,500 new articles are added each month. Ethnic NewsWatch is searchable in both English and Spanish, with titles in both languages; more than 100,000 articles are in Spanish.

Expanded Academic ASAP - UC Only
Coverage: 1980- 
The database contains records for articles from popular magazines, general interest journals, scholarly journals and newspapers in the humanities, social sciences, and general sciences. The complete text of articles (including some full-text images) are available for many of the journals covered in the database.

FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online (ECO) - UCB Only
OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online (ECO) includes the full text of scholarly journals in a variety of subject areas. OCLC/ECO includes all of the original content, images, and bibliographic information for all journals.

Family & Society Studies Worldwide - UC Only
Family & Society Studies Worldwide (FSSW) formerly produced by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR), has been expanded by NISC. FSSW contains all the citations of the discontinued print version, Inventory of Marriage & Family Literature, plus abstracts that were never available in print. It also incorporates Australian Family & Society Abstracts, commonly known as FAMILY, produced by the Australian Institute of Family Studies.

FirstSearch - UC Only
Several OCLC databases: WorldCat (over 27 million monograph and serials titles), ArticleFirst (article and table of contents records from over 11,000 journals in all fields), ERIC (education citations), GPO Monthly Catalog (government citations), PapersFirst, and ProceedingsFirst. Coverage varies by database.

GenderWatch - UCB Only
GenderWatch is a full text database of publications that focus on the impact of gender across a broad spectrum of subject areas. Publications include magazines, academic journals, newspapers, newsletters, books, pamphlets, conference proceedings, and government reports. Coverage extends in some cases back to the 1970s.

Global Newsbank  - UCB Only
Coverage begins with 1996. Provides comprehensive full text coverage of news summaries, broadcasts and transcripts from hundreds of international sources. All sources are in English.

Government Periodicals via Lexis-Nexis  - UCB Only
Provides detailed subject and author indexing to articles from over 170 periodicals published by agencies of the U.S. Government and is updated quarterly (March,  June, Sept, and December). Each update covers more than 2,000 articles of research value.

HAPI is your source for authoritative, worldwide information about Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean basin, the United States-Mexico border region, and Hispanics in the United States.

Historical Abstracts - UC Only
Historical Abstracts is a bibliographic database containing citations to articles on the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada, which are covered in the bibliographic database America: History and Life). The database comprises over half a million bibliographic entries and covers over 2,000 journals published worldwide. All abstracts are written in English. In addition  to including the key historical journals from virtually every major country, Historical Abstracts includes a targeted selection of hundreds of journals in the social sciences and humanities. Historical Abstracts includes approximately 3,000 citations to historical book reviews and citations to abstracts of dissertations worldwide.

Historical Newspapers (Proquest) - UCB Only
New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times & Wall Street Journal, LA Times. To search all of the newspapers, on the ProQuest home page click on the Database: Multiple databases... menu list down arrow. Then select from the menu list the newspaper you wish to search.

Historical Newspapers Online - UCB Only
Historical Newspapers Online contains four major historical resources: Palmer's Index to the Times which covers the period from 1790 to 1905 in The Times; The Official Index to the Times which takes the coverage forward from 1906 to 1980; The Historical Index to the New York Times which covers The New York Times from 1851-September 1922 (The current release of the The Historical Index to The New York Times contains data from the years 1863 to 1905.); Palmer's Full Text Online 1785-1870, providing access to the full text articles referenced in Palmer's index to the Times. These resources are starting points for students and scholars of all aspects of British life and world affairs in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They are constantly used by researchers in the fields of history, politics, economics, business, the arts, and entertainment, even sports.

The key national resource for local government publications of the United States. Contains citations to and the full text (PDF format) of local government publications from approximately 500 selected cities and counties in the United States and Canada. At the core of the collection are fiscal and planning documents, including budgets and financial reports, and city, county and regional plans. The Index is also a good source of locally generated socioeconomic statistics, public health and social service planning, and business and physical infrastructure information. International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) - UCB Only
International Bibliography of the Social Sciences is compiled by the British Library of Political & Economic Science of the London School of Economics & Political Science. This database contains bibliographic information from an international selection of publications (including over 2600 journals) in the fields of economics, political science, sociology, and anthropology. International coverage means that about 30 percent of records in the database are published in languages other than English. Records come from more than 100 countries and 70 languages. Most articles and books not in English are provided with an English title translation. This database provides citations of journals, books, book reviews, and chapters when multiple authors have worked on a book. About 100,000 citations per year are added to the database. Coverage includes 1981 to the present.

International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP) - UCB Only
IIBP Full Text includes current and retrospective (dating back as far as 1910)
bibliographic citations and abstracts from over 150 scholarly and popular journals, newspapers and newsletters from the United States, Africa and the Caribbean--and full text coverage of 25 core Black Studies periodicals (1998 forward). See the title list for periodicals included. Most IIBP Full Text records in the current coverage (1998 forward) contain an abstract, and additionally many IIBP Full Text records contain the corresponding full text of the original article; some records contain the table of contents of the journal. Coverage is international in scope and multidisciplinary--spanning cultural, economic, historical, religious, social, and political issues of vital importance to the Black Studies discipline. Coverage: 1980-
Use this database to research: Case Studies, Government Regulations, Practice of Law, Statutes, Taxation and International Law. Access all major law reviews, and specialty law and bar association journals. Use LegalTrac to identify the journal articles that you'd like to read. Then check Lexis-Nexis Academic to see if the articles are available there. 

Lexis-Nexis Academic - UCB Only
Lexis-Nexis Academic is one of the single largest web-based databases for current worldwide news and information. Lexis-Nexis Academic supports a broad range of interdisciplinary research. The database contains full text and abstracts of news, business, and legal information and provides full-text access to nearly 6,000 individual titles. Users can search foreign and domestic newspapers and wire services; radio and television transcripts; and business, medical, industry, and legislative magazines, journals, and newsletters. There is wide geographic coverage and a translations from foreign-language sources, as well as news services like Reuters, Associated Press, Agence France Press, and Xinhua (New China) News Agency. The database is updated daily for most newspapers and even hourly for some wire services and media transcripts.

PolicyFile - UCB Only
PolicyFile indexes research and publication abstracts addressing the complete range of public policy research. Access to home pages, electronic mail addresses and selected full text are made available within the individual abstracts.

Pro and Con Online - UCB Only
Provides full text access to the print publications: Congressional Digest, Supreme Court Debates, and International Debates. Pro and con viewpoints are presented on topics ranging from civil rights, economy, environmental policy, politics and government, and foreign policy. Coverage includes 1998-present.

Proceedings (Conference Proceedings) [via Firstsearch/OCLC] - UC Only
Use the OCLC Proceedings database to retrieve records for worldwide conferences, symposia, meetings, expositions, and congresses. The proceedings cover a wide variety of disciplines, including the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Physical and Life Sciences. Each proceedings provides a list of papers presented. Individual records for each paper may be found in the PapersFirst database. The Proceedings database is of medium size and contains citations to proceedings in English and other languages indexed from 1993 to the present. The database covers published proceedings received by the British Library Document Supply Center. 

PsycARTICLES - UC Only

Full-text articles from 51 of the most heavily used psychology journals it the field, including journals published by the American Psychological Association (APA), the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe & Huber. All journals covered in PsycARTICLES are indexed in the PsycINFO database (but not vice-versa). Coverage generally begins with 1987.

PsycINFO - UC Only
Coverage: 1887-
Use the PsycINFO database to retrieve citations to articles in over 1,300 professional journals, conference proceedings, books, reports, and dissertations in psychology and related disciplines. Most citations include abstracts.

Coverage: 1966-
PubMed provides access to bibliographic information which includes

Research Library (ProQuest) indexes more than 1,000 magazines and journals on art, business, humanities, health, social sciences, and sciences. Includes some full text. Coverage includes 1975 to the present.

Sexual Diversity Studies - UC Only
Sexual Diversity Studies (SDS) offers a balanced, objective, and thorough 
review of scholarly as well as popular print, electronic, and internet publications of the GLBT press. Most topics of interest to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans-gender communities are covered in depth. Of paramount importance is the coverage of history, culture, social issues, interests, and concerns of the GLBT community. SDS is an essential guide to the ongoing intellectual and scholarly discussions of subjects which reflect the diversity of the GLBT community.

Social Sciences Citation Index - UCB Only
Coverage: 1970 -
The Social Sciences Citation Index is a multidisciplinary database, with searchable author abstracts, covering the journal literature of the social sciences. It indexes 1,700 journals spanning 50 disciplines, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 3,300 of the world's leading scientific and technical journals. Social Services Abstracts - UCB Only
Coverage: 1980- 
Produced by Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, the database abstracts and indexes over 1,600 serials publications and includes abstracts of journal articles and dissertations, and citations to book reviews.  Subject areas include social work, human services, and related areas, including social welfare, social policy, and community development. 

Social Work Abstracts - UCB Only
Coverage: 1977- 
The database is produced by the National Association of Social Workers, Inc. and contains more than 45,000 records, spanning 1977 to the present, from social work and other related journals on topics such as homelessness, AIDS, child and family welfare, aging, substance abuse, legislation, community organization, and more.  This is the electronic version of Social Work Abstracts (HV30.A12N2.A2, Social Welfare Library)

Statistical information via Lexis-Nexis - UCB Only
Lexis-Nexis Statistical includes all index and abstract records from: American Statistics Index (ASI) [1973-present], Statistics Reference Index (SRI) [1980-present], and Index to International Statistics (IIS) [1983-present]. ASI links to many full-text documents published during 1994- and stored on LEXIS-NEXIS and links to 2,000 publications on federal agency web sites. Materials abstracted in ASI and IIS are available on microfiche in the East Reading Room, 2nd Floor Doe Library. Most of the materials abstracted in SRI are available on microfiche in the Business Library. (

Newspaper Archives on the Web provides links to Web versions of dozens of U.S. newspapers and their full text, online back files.

Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000
Women and Social Movements in the United States brings together books, images, documents, scholarly essays, commentaries, and bibliographies, documenting the multiplicity of womens reform activities. Organized around the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000, it seeks to advance scholarly debates and understanding at the same time that it makes the insights of women's history accessible to teachers and students at universities, colleges, and high schools.

Women's Studies International - UCB Only
Women's Studies International is a comprehensive source consisting of ten women's studies databases including Women's Studies Abstracts. It provides references to books, articles, reports, media, etc. that are concerned with women and women's issues. Coverage includes 1972 - present, with semi-annual updates.

WorldCat  [via FirstSearch/OCLC] - UC Only
The WorldCat database includes citations for books, journals, manuscripts, maps, music scores, sound recordings, films, computer files, newspapers, slides, videotapes, etc., in a variety of languages in the subject areas of arts and humanities, social sciences, engineering and technology, history, biological and medical sciences, physical sciences, and interdisciplinary and ethnic studies. Via this version of the database, it is possible to search by publisher.

WorldCat Dissertations and Theses - UCB Only
Lists over 5 million dissertations and master's theses found in the WorldCat database. Also lists some published materials based on dissertations or theses. Coverage includes some items published prior to 1861.
