What's on reserve
The Social Welfare Library puts material on reserve for a course if requested by the instructor.  The purpose of short-term reserve is to ensure that everyone will have access to the material. This is especially true of high-use items.

Generally, only the required readings are on reserve.  Unless there is high demand for recommended readings, we will not put those on reserve. The reserve collection includes books, journals, photocopies of articles, and other temporary material.  In addition, we try to make copies of course readers available for reserve.  We will not have copies of exams, answer keys, or term papers unless they have been submitted by the instructor specifically for reserve in the current semester.

If you have trouble getting an item because it is in high demand or the class is large, please notify the library's reserves supervisor.  Please be aware that some processing time is required and that new material may not be immediately available after being introduced in class by the instructor.  If you cannot find an item, please do not hesitate to ask at the circulation desk about its status.

Number of copies
When we have the reserve reading in our collection, we will put all copies on reserve.  You may be able to find copies in Gladis or Pathfinder which are available for longer checkouts.

Loan periods
We will check out a maximum of 3 reserves items to you at one time.  The default loan period for reserve items is 2-hours, plus overnight checkout. The due time is calculated from the top of the next hour.  At 1:59, a 2-hour book will be due at 4 pm; at 2:01, it will be due at 5 pm.  If checked out within two hours of closing time, a 2-hour item will be due after we open the next business day.  Reserve items checked out overnight on Saturday will be due on Monday morning.  Reserve items may be renewed for an additional two hours, but renewals must be done in person.  Most reserve items may be taken out of the library.  However, some reserve items are library use only; these will be noted in the catalog.

How to find reserve readings
Reserve readings are listed only in Gladis.  You may look up courses using the following commands:
To find by course:
f co socw [course number, social welfare]

f co pubh [course number, public health]

To find by instructor:
f in [instructor name as last name, first name]

Type the number of the course you want, then locate the item you want in the list.  Copy down the call number and bring it to the circulation desk.

Most reserve items are shelved behind the desk.  Some journals are shelved in the open stacks; if so, you will see the note, "Open stacks."  Gladis will indicate whether an item is checked out and when it is due.  There will also be a note if the item is on restricted circulation status, such as library use only.

If you don't find your course in the search results, it means no material has been put on reserve yet.  If the catalog says the item is "not ready," most likely the item is being recalled from a borrower and will be here shortly.  Check with the circulation desk after a few days.

Read your syllabus carefully
Be aware that reserve items may not be identified in the catalog exactly as they were in class by your instructor.

As a general rule, the library does not make a separate reserve photocopy of an article or chapter if it has the original volume in which these appear.  Instead, we  put the complete volume on reserve.  Be sure to read the complete entry in your syllabus to locate a reserve item.

Example:

Brekke, J. (1990) Crisis intervention with victims and perpetrators of spouse abuse. In H. Parad and L. Parad, Crisis intervention, book 2. Wisconsin: Family Service America.

Blumenfield, Susan. (1995) Reflections on effective leadership: strains and successes, strategies and styles. Social work in health care, 29(4), 21-37.

Since both readings come from items in the library, we will not have separate photocopies of the articles on reserve. You must look for the book (Crisis intervention, book 2) or journal title (Social work in health care) in the course reserve listings.

Miscellaneous reserve items

  • Competency exams. The library usually puts a few titles on reserve for students to use in preparing for competency exams.  These books have not been recommended by the instructor administering the exam but may have used for the same class in previous years.  The library also may make available copies of syllabi for the course from the previous year.  To find comp exam material in Gladis, type f co sem=[semester code] socw [course number], and look for the "Competency exam" entry.  The semester code is f (fall) or s (spring) + the year.  Example: f03 = fall 2003, s02 = spring 2002..

  • Course evaluations.  The library holds a notebook of course evaluations from previous semesters.  These evaluations are not listed in the catalog, but you may ask for them at the circulation desk.

  • Field statement papers.  The library has a collection of field statement papers from previous doctoral students.  The collection is not comprehensive and is not cataloged.  Ask for them at the circulation desk.

  • Field placement evaluations.  When the School of Social Welfare has prepared evaluations of 2nd-year field placements, they will be shelved in the library for library use.  The evaluations will not be listed in the Gladis catalog.
Tips for better service
  • All reserve items are shelved by call number.  It helps if you have the complete call number ready when you come to the desk.

  • Look up all the reserve items and get their call numbers before you come to the library.

  • Check out or renew items just after the hour or within 2 hours of closing time.  Because of the way the due time is calculated, this will give you extra time or overnight use.

  • Purchase a library copy card for convenience in photocopying reserve assignments. You may be able to save on textbook and reader costs by copying the material yourself.
