Social Welfare Library floor plan

Social Welfare Library floor plan

The library is divided into "open" stacks (the purple shelves) and "desk" stacks (the blue staff area).  Open stack books are available for browsing.  Desk books are designated "DESK" in the catalogs and must be paged by call number at the desk.  Books may be shelved behind the desk because they are new acquisitions, at risk for theft, valuable, fragile, or regularly used for course reserve.

Unless the catalogs indicate otherwise, both open and desk books are available for checkout.

Library material is shelved using the Library of Congress call number system.  A map showing exact shelving locations of call numbers is available at the circulation desk.

All dissertations from the School of Social Welfare are shelved behind the desk.

Most bound journals are shelved by call number in the open stacks.  A small number of titles are shelved behind the desk and are denoted as DESK in the catalogs.

Many unbound journals are shelved in the open stacks (see red shelves above).  Some unbound journals are shelved behind the desk and will be so noted in the catalog.

If you don't find what you're looking for in the open stacks, be sure to ask at the circulation desk and we will be happy to help you locate it.
