Access and use of the collection

The Social Welfare Library is open to the public and we particulary welcome visits by members of the social work community.  However, during busy periods, we will give priority assistance to borrowers affiliated with the university.

No library card is needed for in-library use of the collection, and a photocopy machine is available.  Checking out material for use outside the library requires a campus ID or library card for UCB students, faculty and staff. Non-UCB-affiliated borrowers must obtain a library card from the Privileges Desk on the 1st floor of Doe Library.

Access for disabled users

Library staff will assist users with physical disabilities in locating and checking out material, and in use of the catalogs.

Several library services are available for users with disabilities.  The Disabled Students' Program Assistive Technology Center, also known as "the Cave," maintains workstations with assistive technology that allow users with disabilities to use library catalogs themselves.  The Disabled Users Library Network has branch representatives at campus libraries to assist disabled users.  For assistance at the Social Welfare Library, please contact Craig Alderson at (510) 642-4432 or by email

Both the library and Haviland Hall are fully wheelchair-accessible. Users in wheelchairs can reach the library via the north entrances to Haviland Hall.
