I. New Electronic Resources:
- Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences Online
- Pharmaceutical Substances
- Times (of London) Digital Archive
- Taylor and Francis Online Journals
- Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences
- Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences Online (NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students) contains regularly updated articles and revisions to previously published articles and includes the full text of the second print edition, the entire original edition, plus supplements and updates all on one searchable site. Topics covered include Bayesian Inference, Biostatistics and Clinical Trials, Life Testing, Reliability and Survival Analysis, Sampling, and much more.
- Pharmaceutical Substances (NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students) is a complete reference guide to 2300 active pharmaceutical ingredients. The description of each compound includes: Chemical structure, graphical representation of synthetic route including intermediates, nomenclature, ATC codes, medical applications/therapeutic category, toxicological data, patent number, commercial information, and bibliographic information including CASSI codes.
- Times (of London) Digital Archive (NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students) contains searchable cover-to-cover full text of over 200 years (1785 to 1985, 1986 to 2003 to be added later) of The London Times.
- Taylor and Francis Online Journals: The complete Taylor and Francis online journals collection (NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students) totals more than 1,000 titles in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. UC Berkeley already had online access to those Taylor and Francis journals received in print and this extends our access in all subject areas. Individual journal titles may be located using the Melvyl catalog or the UC-eLinks Electronic Journals Search. In addition, UC-eLinks will link to the online text of articles in these journals from article databases such as PubMed.
- Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences: The backfile for the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences is now available via Blackwell Synergy. The backfile goes back to Volume 1, Issue 1 (December 1879), although some content is missing. UC-eLinks from article databases should now take you to the full text of Annals articles, or you can access the journal directly via http://uclibs.org/PID/102498. (NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students)
- More new resources are available on our What's New web page.
II. Public Health Library Move Updates
- The Sheldon Margen Public Health Library is moving. We will be at our current location in 42 Warren Hall until September 13 at 5PM. We will then be closed until October 8, when we will reopen at our new location, 1 University Hall. Updates and details are posted on our move web page.
III. PubMed and Browsers
- The recent change to the PubMed system has meant that users of PubMed and other Entrez databases may need to upgrade or change to another browser. To help address this, the National Center for Biomedical Information (NCBI) has added a new FAQ, Which Web browsers will work with PubMed?.
From the FAQ:
PubMed has been tested on the following browsers although other versions may work without difficulties:
- Browsers that have been exhaustively tested:
- Windows: IE 7.0, IE 6.0, Firefox 2.0, Opera 9
- Macintosh: Safari 2.0 on OSX 10.4, FireFox 2.0 on OS X 10.2-10.4, Opera 9
- Solaris (Sun OS 10): FireFox 2.0, Opera 9
- Browsers that have been tested and seem to work reasonably well:
- Windows: FireFox 1.5, SeaMonkey 1.1.2, Netscape 8.2 and 9.0
- Macintosh: FireFox 1.5, iCab on OS 9 (with some problems)
- Browsers that do not work well and should be upgraded:
- Windows: Netscape 7.2, Mozilla 1.7, IE 5.0, IE 5.5 SP2
- Macintosh: Safari, all pre 2.0 versions, Mozilla 1.7, IE (Microsoft no longer supports Macintosh IE, please try another browser such as Safari, FireFox or iCab)
