I. New Electronic Resources:

ToxSeek
Nature Nanotechnology
Emerald Management Xtra
Chinese Studies Online

ToxSeek, from the National Library of Medicine, is a meta-search engine that enables simultaneous searching of many different toxicological and environmental information resources on the World Wide Web, including TOXNET and other National Library of Medicine resources, US Government sites such as ATSDR, CPSC, CDC, DOE, EPA, USDA, and more, WHO, IPCS, and numerous other sites. ToxSeek's results clustering feature helps users to more easily identify particular concepts. These clusters are created from what is retrieved in the original query, and can be useful in uncovering a specific concept or focus for more in-depth searching. ToxSeek may be useful for finding information on difficult topics from numerous sources, but does not allow for advanced (Boolean) searching.

Nature Nanotechnology (NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students) is a new journal to which UCB has access. It covers research into the design, characterization and production of structures, devices and systems that involve the manipulation and control of materials and phenomena at atomic, molecular and macromolecular scales. Coverage extends from basic research in physics, chemistry and biology, including computational work and simulations, through to the development of new devices and technologies for applications in a wide range of industrial sectors.

Emerald Management Xtra (NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students) is a database of full text articles from more than 150 peer reviewed journals in healthcare management, environmental science, marketing, engineering, and more. You can search most of the fields in a citation (title, author, abstract, date, etc.), and also browse by topic.

Chinese Studies Online (NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students) is a gateway to resources on Chinese culture, medicine, business, science, etc. Includes five databases: China Online Journals (COJ); Dissertations of China (DOC); Academic Conferences in China; Chinese Companies and Products; Policies and Laws of China (PLOC). Searchable in English or Chinese. Full text articles are PDFs in Chinese, some with English summaries. Citations may be imported into EndNote or RefWorks.

More new resources are available on our What's New web page.

II. QUOSA
NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students.

QUOSA is a software tool that automatically retrieves full text articles from PubMed, Web of Science, BIOSIS, Zoological Record, and INSPEC. It has several other features including tools to organize, search, and export articles and citations directly to EndNote or RefWorks.

IV. Library Prize for Undergraduate Research: April 16 Deadline

The Library Prize attracts the very best undergraduate papers from courses taught in departments across the campus. It recognizes excellence in undergraduate research projects that show evidence of:
  • significant inquiry using the library, its resources, and collections
  • learning about the research and information-gathering process itself.
A panel composed of UC Berkeley faculty, librarians and other educators will judge entries on the evidence of the applicant's research strategy, process, and personal learning. Submissions are due April 16, 2007, and research projects completed during either the Summer 2006, Fall 2006, or Spring 2007 semester at UCB are eligible. Winners receive cash prizes of $750 and $1000. Details and previous winners' project descriptions are available on the Library Web.

V. EndNote Updates: Recently Revised Import Filters Available for Downloading

The following filters have recently been revised. If you use any of the resources listed below, you can download the filter by right-clicking on the link, and saving it to your EndNote Filters folder. If you need any assistance with this, please contact a reference librarian at the Public Health Library.

VI. Scholarly Communication Web Site from the UC Berkeley Library

Scholarly communication is the system by which information is created (by scholars), distributed (by publishers), and disseminated, preserved, and organized (by libraries). The soaring cost of published information has put this system at risk. This web site has UC Berkeley scholarly communication news, resources, "hot topics", and a "What you can do" section.

VII. Inter-Library Borrowing of Journal Articles via Melvyl's "Request" is Now Available

It is now possible to request journal articles not held at a UCB library by using Melvyl's "Request". After clicking the request gif Request button, fill out the form as usual. After you fill in your patron information, Request echoes back the item you have selected with a "Process my Request Now" button (and copyright agreement). If you've requested a journal, the screen after this will allow you to continue with a Citation Linker form; if selected, you'll then be able to input article citation information.
