- California State Assembly, Office of the Chief Clerk. Archives
- United Way's Outcome Measurement Resource Network
- Sociometrics Social Science Electronic Data Library (NOTE: Access limited to UC faculty, staff and students) is a collection of more than 200 health and social science data sets covering a range of topics including AIDS, the disabled, the American family, aging, maternal drug use, child poverty, and alternative medicine. Also includes several teaching modules intended to demonstrate social science theories, concepts and hypothesis testing.
- California State Assembly, Office of the Chief Clerk. Archives includes Historical Archives of California State Assembly Journals (1949-1997), Histories and Indexes (1881-2001), and Statutes (1850-1995). You can read the original statute as it appears in Statutes and Amendments to the Codes. You can also read the bill history, which lists all of the action taken on a bill. And, the Assembly Journals provide information on the legislative intent of bills. Note: documents on this site consist of very large pdf files that may take many minutes to download.
- United Way's Outcome Measurement Resource Network offers information, downloadable documents, and links to resources related to the identification and measurement of program- and community-level outcomes.
More new resources are available on our What's New web page.II. Web of Science Upgrades: The h-index and Author Finder
- The recent Web of Science upgrade brought some nice new features:
- h-index, defined as the number of papers with citation number ? h, is a useful index to characterize the scientific output of a researcher. For example, an h-index of 20 means that there are 20 items in the search result that have been cited 20 or more times. It is derived from the number of times a scientist’s publications are cited in other papers, but is calculated in a way to avoid some of the problems associated with counting large numbers of marginal papers or high-profile coauthors. Use Web of Science to calculate the h-index of a set of citations. After conducting a search, click on Citation Report on the right side of the screen. The h-index will appear near the top right of the screen. More information is avialable from ISI Web of Science
- Author Finder is a quick four-step process that helps you find papers published by an author. To begin, click the link below the Author search box from General Search, or on the home page under Quick Search. Author Finder helps you to find variants of the same author name or to distinguish one author from another by field of research and/or address. Details at Web of Science Help.
III. Global NewsBank: Now Included in Access World News
- Access World News now includes both the former America's Newspapers and Global NewsBank. Full text news articles from over 1800 Newspapers from around the world are available, including over 700 U.S. newspapers. Coverage dates vary by newspaper; some go back to the late 1970s. Access World News may easily be searched by newspaper title, geographic area, article title/text, and more.
IV. Online Access to Core Public Health Journals Backfiles
- Two core public health journals now have greatly expanded online backfiles:
Note that both of these journals have undergone title changes over the years. These links provide access to all the various title changes. Articles from these journals are available at the links above, and also via UC-eLinks.
- American Journal of Public Health is now available back to volume 2 (1912).
- Public Health Reports is now available back to volume 87 (1972)
V. New Journal from PLoS: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases
- The Public Library of Science, publishers of several open access journals, just announced the creation of a new journal, PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. This journal will focus on the overlooked diseases that strike millions of people every year in poor countries, including elephantiasis, river blindness, leprosy, hookworm, schistosomiasis, and African sleeping sickness. The journal, supported by a $1.1 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will begin accepting submissions in 2007.
