I. Changes and Updates to Several Library Resources

Access to, and content of, several library resources has changed:

a. BIOSIS Previews: Access to BIOSIS Previews has switched to a new interface and vendor starting in July 2005. ISI, the Institute for Scientific Information is our new vendor. Because the OVID interface has also changed, and will end in December, we recommend that you become familiar with the ISI Web of Knowledge interface for BIOSIS.

b. ABI Inform: UC Access to ABI/Inform ended on Sept. 1, 2005. For scholarly research in management, economics, finance, accounting, international business, etc., as well as detailed company profiles, use Business Source Premier.

c. PAIS International and PAIS Archive: Access to backfiles of PAIS International is now available via PAIS Archive. We now have access back to 1937. PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) has citations of articles on health policy, health planning, social policy, health services, and other policy and economic topics.

d. CAB Abstracts: Similarly, we now have access to CAB Abstracts back to 1910. CAB covers all aspects of sustainable development and applied life sciences, with emphasis on agriculture, forestry, human health, nutrition, and the management of natural resources, and with particular attention to the needs of developing countries.

e. Toxics Release Inventory (TRI): Access to 2003 data is now available. TRI lists amounts of certain chemicals released to the environment using data compiled annually. Access to TRI is available from several sources; see our Toxicology/Occupational Health Resources web page for information.

f. PubMed Help is now a book on the NCBI Bookshelf. The enhanced PubMed Help on the Bookshelf will replace the online Help previously available from the PubMed sidebar. Details are avilable in the NLM Technical Bulletin.

II. Newly Available Online Library Resources  (More new resources are listed on our What's New web page.)

a. Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials
NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students.
Sax's is now available online. Sax's contains data on toxicologicy, flammability, reactivity, explosive potential, and regularity information for about 26,000 substances.

b. Methods in Enzymology
NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students.
Methods in Enzymology is a book series of over 300 volumes dating back to 1955 that contains detailed protocols and descriptions of biochemical and biophysical techniques. You may browse individual volumes or search across the collection by author, title, abstract, and keyword.

c. Law About... (Legal Information Institute, Cornell University) provides brief summaries of law topics with links to key primary source material, other Internet resources, and useful offnet references. The topics are browsable by broad topic categories and by an alphabetical listing of topics. Federal, State, and International resources are provided.

d. Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry
NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students.
Subject areas in Ullmann's include: inorganic and organic chemicals, advanced materials, pharmaceuticals, polymers and plastics, metals and alloys, biotechnology and biotechnological products, food chemistry, process engineering and unit operations, analytical methods, environmental protection, and more. You can search for a word or phrase within the full text, search by chemical name or number, or use the chemical, subject, or other indexes.

e. Canary Database (Yale University Occupational and Environmental Medicine) contains studies in the biomedical literature that explore the use of animals as "sentinels" for the effects of chemical, biological, and physical hazards in the environment that may be a risk to human health. For each study, curators add information about animal species, exposures, health effects, location, and whether the study includes data providing evidence linking animal sentinel events to human health risk. You can browse the database by year, journal, author, exposure, risk factor, species, outcome, or by methodology.
