I. American Chemical Society and NIH's PubChem - Action Alert

"The American Chemical Society (ACS) is calling on Congress to shut down the NIH's PubChem, a freely accessible database that connects chemical information with biomedical research and clinical information, organizing facts in numerous public databases into a unified whole. It is a critical component of NIH's Molecualr Libraries Initiative which in turn is a key element of the NIH strategic "roadmap" to speed new medical treatments and improve health care. ACS claims that PubChem competes with its Chemical Abstracts Servics (CAS). There are strong arguments that PubChem and the Chemical Abstracts Service databases are complementary, not duplicative." More information is available from the University of California's Office of Scholarly Communication. Please consider taking action on this important issue. See http://osc.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/acs_pubchem.html#actions for information, including who to contact on Congress.

PubChem is available via the Public Health Library's Toxicology/Occupational Health Resources web page.

II. 1970 Census now available in Counting California

"This data set contains demographic tables for each person (i.e., 100% count of person), including data on race, age, ethnicity, sex, marital status, and information on schooling, labor force status, and children, as well as details on occupation and income." To search or browse this data set, please visit Counting California at http://countingcalifornia.cdlib.org/title/sc1970.html.

Counting California is available via the Public Health Library's Statistical/Data Resources and California Agencies and Resources web pages.

III. 157 Chemical Records added to NLM's Hazardous Substances Data Bank

157 new chemical records have been added to the HSDB. "HSDB is part of the National Library of Medicine's TOXNET system. It focuses on the toxicology of over 4,700 potentially hazardous chemicals, and is enhanced with information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas." More information on HSDB may be found at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/factsheets/hsdbfs.html.
