__________________________________________________________I. Extended Hours for Laptop & Mouse Borrowing During the Academic Year
The Public Health Library has extended the hours when laptop and/or mouse borrowing are available. The latest checkout times for these items are now 7:30 pm Monday through Thursday, 3:30 pm Friday through Sunday. Laptops or mice checked out after 6pm Mon-Thurs are due at 8:15, and any checked out after 3pm on Fri-Sun are due at 4:15pm.
II. CDL Databases to be Cancelled
California Digital Library (CDL) funds for shared resources have been cut substantially. In consultation with the campuses, three databases have been chosen for cancellation: Current Contents, the Computer Database, and National Newspaper Index. These databases were chosen because their content is largely duplicative of other licensed digital resources available Systemwide.
There is a 100% content overlap of Current Contents in the larger Web of Science database. (Both Current Contents and Web of Science are ISI databases.) Searchers of Current Contents will get much more content by searching Web of Science.
Current Contents will be cancelled as of January 2005. The Computer Database and National Newspaper Index will be cancelled as of July 2004.
Automatic weekly email alerts can be set up in Web of Science. The alerting capability enables you to find out how often your work has been cited, as well as to allow you to stay up to date on the impact of your published research. For details see Creating Updates/Alerts in Vendor, Commercial, Society, eJournal Publisher and University Press Databases (including Web of Science) at http://www.cdlib.org/inside/instruct/alerts.html.
Assistance with Web of Science is available at the Public Health Library reference desk.
III. Training on GenBank and Related Databases
UCB Library's Center for Science and Engineering Information Literacy (CSEIL) is hosting the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) course "A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources," at UCB on August 10 and 11, 2004. UCB faculty, students and staff will have priority.
For more information and to reserve a seat, go to http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/CSEIL/ncbi_training.html.
IV. Changes in the ERIC Database
The ERIC database is currently undergoing a major overhaul. Beginning in January 2004 and until the new ERIC model for acquiring education literature is developed later in 2004, no new materials will be received and accepted for the database. In the meantime it will be necessary to use other tools to locate 2004 resources. The print version of H. W. Wilson's Education Index is at the Education & Psychology Library
